FRANK FULTON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 26 to Oct. 27, 2011.
Frank Hundley Fulton

On October 24, 2011, Frank Hundley Fulton passed from this earth to his heavenly home at 8pm from within the comfort and care of the Kindred Hospital of Greensboro, NC.

Born September 1, 1931, Frank devoted all 80 years of his life to his family and his community of Danville, Virginia. He Graduated from George Washington High School where he participated in baseball and football. He was very proud of playing for the late Lefty Wilson and during his high school days, he played first base for a state championship team as well as playing competitively for the local American Legion Team. Frank attended Virginia Tech-Extension of Danville, Virginia and served in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he played International softball in the French Morocco. All of his adult life, he worked for Danville Concrete/Marshalls' Ready Mix, until his retirement. During that time, he was a member at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Later, he attended St. Johns United Methodist and Sharon Baptist Church. Frank also played semi-professional baseball in the county leagues of Southside Virginia, was a very active member of the men's fast-pitch softball league of Danville, an associate scout for the Cincinnati Reds, and the General Manager of the Danville Leafs/Danville Concrete Semi-Professional Team. Frank was best known for his coaching of young men in sports and his devotion to his family. He devoted his time to developing youth through athletics and coached young men for decades in football, basketball, and his special lovebaseball. In 1973, Frank revived the old American Legion Baseball Program and started a 25-year campaign of baseball development for the student/athletes of the area. He helped young men go to college, encouraged youth to succeed in school, and was the driving force behind many local high school graduates who went on to play professional baseball. In his later years, he turned his attention to teaching younger athletes the secrets of the game at his personal batting cage.

Frank loved his family and his players. He was dedicated to virtuous living and he was ready to go the extra mile to help those in need. Frank married Mary Magnolia Jenkins in 1956 and they had three sons, all of whom survive. The children are Frank Hundley Fulton, Jr. (Anna Nunn Fulton), William Johnson Fulton (Diana Dodd Fulton), and Charles Edward Fulton (Christie Austin Fulton). Ten grand-children and their spouses; Peyton Bryant Fulton (Ashley Elizabeth Stanton Fulton), Benjamin Patrick Fulton, Justin Kenneth Fulton, Jonathan Martyn Fulton (Meredith Daly Fulton), Joshua Gideon Fulton, Jennifer Nicole Fulton, Morgan Anthony Fulton, Alexis Victoria Fulton, Kenna Lyndsey Fulton, Camden Maddox Fulton, and one great grand-child, Madison Brooke Fulton. Frank was the son of Elizabeth Hundley Fulton and William Johnson Fulton, who predeceased him. In addition, five older brothers and sisters as well as their spouses predeceased him. Those siblings and spouses were James Edward Fulton (Pearl Allen Fulton), Francis Elizabeth Fulton Pusey (Carl Long Pusey), Patsy Johnson Fulton Travis (Charles Carter Travis), Mildred Carter Fulton Owen (Claude "Bunny" Owen), and John Stokeley Fulton (Virginia Ann Perkins Fulton).

Frank's funeral Service will be held Friday, October 28, 2011 at 11AM at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, Danville, Virginia with the Reverend Barry Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. Miliary Honors will be provided by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 and Virginia Army National Guard. The family will receive friends on Thursday , October 27, 2011 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Townes Funeral Home.

Frank was always kind to me and I remember he came to the house to escort me to homecoming dance when I was homecoming attendant and was such a gentleman.

Frank was my coach in Babe Ruth League Baseball. That was 49 years ago. He taught me a great deal about the game he truly loved all his life. He not only loved baseball, he loved to share it with anybody. Through all the years since then, whenever I ran in to him, we always talked and usually it wound up talking about baseball. Not many people have given so much to the youth of this city.

Frank Fulton coached two of my sons, Jeff and Jerry Burton, and they learned so much baseball from him. He spent countless hours in team practices but was always willing to devote additional hours to them individually in his batting cage. He was tough but fair and we appreciate all that he has done for our children and the children of many others through the years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Frank, Jr. & family,
Very sorry for your loss. Have many fond memories of playing ball for your Dad. Always felt he was good man. He taught me as much about sportsmanship as he did about baseball. The Danville community has lost a great teacher and example for their young people.

Ed and the Fulton Family,
I am sorry to hear of Frank's passing. I enjoyed his many visits to my office where we discussed baseball for hours. He also played a big role in my son's sucessful baseball career. He also offered his batting facility for me to bring Hargrave players to use where he generously shared his knowledge of "how to hit the baseball".The Coach will be sadly missed.
