Franklin Piacentini Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 21, 2011.
Piacentini, Dr. Franklin D.R. 77 Jan. 30, 1934 Aug. 16, 2011 Dr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Piacentini was born Jan. 30, 1934, at home on S.W. Kelly St., Portland, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's birthday. His mother was hoping for a daughter after having two boys and did not have a name chosen for a boy. The attending physician suggested she name him after the President. Among his memorabilia is a letter of congratulations from President Roosevelt. Frank grew up in a large extended Italian family, including not only his parents, Carl Piacentini of Lucca, Italy, and Margaret Gilda Colistro, of Trail, B.C., and two older brothers, Carl and John, but his mother's nine sisters, maternal grandparents and numerous cousins. He and his brothers had lots of adventures growing up. Frank especially remembered his brother John forging excuse notes to his teacher at Richmond Elementary School, so they could go to Oaks Park for the afternoon. He loved chemistry experiments, which in one case blew out the basement windows of the family home. While intelligent, lively and curious, Frank was a poor student in his early years in elementary school and at Franklin High School. He did not start to bloom academically until college at Portland State University, when he spent long hours studying in his parents' basement. He was a top student in his dental school class at the University of Oregon Dental School (Oregon Health & Science University) where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine. He then earned his Master of Science in Dentistry degree in Orthodontics from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. Frank thoroughly enjoyed his orthodontics practice of 38 years and was proud of the fact that he had straightened the teeth of more than 10,000 patients. He was very involved in his profession and taught at the dental school for a short time. For many years he was a consultant for the Crippled Children's Division at OHSU School of Dentistry. Frank was the past president of the Northern Section-Pacific Coast Orthodontics Society, past president of the Oregon Orthodontic Society and the Oregon Society of Dentistry for Children. He was a member of the Oregon Orthodontic Research Seminar for all his years in practice. Frank was a firm believer in community service, most recently serving as president of the Portland Japanese Garden Foundation board and as a member of the Finance and Investment Committee of Providence St. Vincent Hospital. His past community involvement included serving as past president of the Portland Japanese Garden Society, the North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce and the Milwaukie Rotary Club. He was a past Master Treasurer of the Knights of the Vine wine brotherhood and a board member of the Portland Bologna Sister City Association, Board of Regents, St. Mary's Academy and the Council of Trustees, Providence St. Vincent Hospital. In addition to his active orthodontic practice and community service, Frank developed many residential projects, individually and with partners. Some of these properties included Claremont, Portland; Broken Top, Bend; and The Capes, Oceanside, Ore. He was a partner in the development of the 1515 Building, Burlington Tower, the Bank of America building and numerous commercial and apartment properties, as well as residential developments. In 1959, Frank married Dorothy Jeanne Barker, whom he met while she was working at the dental school. They have three children and six grandchildren. Frank was especially proud of his Italian heritage and made a number of trips to Italy. He and Dorothy enjoyed four different cooking classes they took while in Italy. Frank took great pleasure cooking "Italian" for his friends and family. Upon his retirement from practice, Frank took over most of the cooking duties at home. He loved good food and had nearly perfect recall of the meals he especially enjoyed at home and abroad. In addition to cooking, Frank enjoyed tending to his Japanese-style garden at his residence and hunting for mushrooms. A love of t ravel took Frank and Dorothy to more than 60 countries. His favorite trip was to South Africa and Botswana in June 2009 with Dorothy and all their children and grandchildren to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The most important aspect of Frank's life was his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he loved very much. Frank spent many special moments creating projects with the grandchildren, such as rubber band guns, inventing board games and composing long elaborate stories on the spot. Frank is survived by his wife; son, Frank B. Piacentini and his wife, Sara W. Weinstein; son, Robert P. Piacentini and his wife, Liping Tang; daughter, Angela J. Kilman, Ph.D. and her husband, Matthew; grandchildren, Zachary M. Ledesma, Yi Tang Piacentini, Franklin A. Piacentini, Alexander R. Kilman, Maxwell T. Kilman and Sofia Tang Piacentini; aunts, Gloria Catalan and Lorraine Livesay and her husband, Earl; and nieces; nephews; and cousins. Frank was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Carl and John. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Saint Michael's Catholic Church, 1701 S.W. Fourth Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Portland Japanese Garden Society, Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation or Portland Opera.

I was one of Dr. Piacentini's young orthodontics patients too. I remember sitting in his waiting room reading Highlights kid's magazines... with Goofus and Gallant... He was a very nice man. Rest in Peace in the Eternal Presence of the Lord, Dr. Piacentini...

I just heard the news today of Dr. Piacentini's passing and I am so very sorry to hear the sad news. Having grown up in the neighborhood with his son Frank, I can say that while Dr. Piacentini was a somewhat strict father, he was also a very caring parent who obviously loved his children very much. I have many fond memories of growing up in the neighborhood and Dr. Piacentini was very much a part of those fond memories.

Dear Piacentini family,
What a complete shock Franks passing must have been and to this day, still is. Many of you don't know me, but I've been keeping up with your family for years, therefor, I feel a hollow place inside when thinking that "The Great Italian Kingpin" of this entire town is no longer with us..... Or is he..?? I love you always, Dorothy.
Sincerely,
Mimi Nelson

I am a residential architect and land planner and had the previlege of working with Frank on a number of pojects in Oregon. He was the perfect gentleman at all times and made you feel that he really appreciated your worth. My wife and I were able to tour the Japanese Garden with him when he was president of the foundation and still recount the enjoyment of being with him that day. The world would be a lot better if there were more people giving and sharing like Frank did.

Dorothy, Bob and I were so sorry to hear about Frank. He was a wonderful man and we feel very honored to have known him as well as you. He will be missed by many.

Frank straightened not only our 3 children's teeth, but mine as well.

Dear Dorothy, We were surprised and saddened to learn of Frank's passing. We really enjoyed getting better acquainted with both of you on the OSDC trips. Frank was always so full of ideas and enthusiasm, plus he had the talent and energy to go with it. You and he made a great team. Warm thoughts and prayers are being sent your way.

Dear Dorothy, Frank, Bob, and Angela;
Bob, Grigsby, Doug and I are so sorry for your loss. I'm at a loss for words so I'll just echo what Bob McDonald told me: I have never met a force like Frank, and I am the better for it.

I just wanted to say that Dr. Piacentini was both of my children's orthodontist. He was a beautiful kind man. I really didnt know much about him except for the experience they had in the office. He was lovely to my children. After reading this in the newspaper, I only wish that we had known him better with so much to offer! Thank you to his family for sharing such a special man.

I was one of those 10,000 kids Dr. Piacentini put braces on. I am now 41 years old and am sad to hear of his passing. I remember him being a nice man and always very upbeat. My condolences to his family.

Dear Piacentini Family,

I am one of the 10,000. Dr. Piacentini straightened my very crooked teeth and gave me a beautiful smile. I have always been grateful to him (and my Mother), for placing high value on excellent dental care.

Dr. Piacentini improved so many lives and brightened so many smiles. I will always remember him and be thankful for his talents.

I am sorry for your loss.

Dorothy - I am sorry to hear of Frank's passing. You two have always been my favorites. I'll miss his smile and readiness to learn about what I was up to. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you in what I'm sure is a difficult time.

August 21, 2011

Dear Piacentini Family, I was probably one of his first patients in the 60s. I have fond memories of taking the bus from Lincoln High to his office by Lloyd Center. I found him to be a kind, thoughtful man. He used to tease that he wanted to see my smile as a Rose Festival princess. Instead I ran for Miss St. Johns. Prayers to you all. Dear Dorothy, My sincere sympathies to you and your family on Frank's passing. I have enjoyed working with Frank both at your Portland home and your gorgeous "Capes" home. Frank was one of my dearest clients and I enjoyed working with his warm and caring manner. I will miss him but he will long be in my thoughts.

We are saddened and so sorry to hear this news. What fond memories we have of the trips to Hawaii and dental functions where we had such a good time with Frank and Dorothy. Ken remembers Frank as one of his best friends in science classes at Franklin High. Frank was truly an inspiration for many and the perfect example of what a good citizen should be. We will miss him. Most sincerely, Dr. Ken and Susan Wilson Berg

My condolences to the family of Dr. Franklin Piacentini. My daughter, Janet, was one of his many patients when she was a junior and senior at Molalla High. Janet shared with him her excitement at touring Italy with me to visit my sister who lived and worked in Rome. I think of Dr. Piacentini as a modern Renaissance man with his many interests and generosity of spirit.

So sorry to hear of Franks passing. My memories of him go back to Cub Scouts at Ainsworth school in the 70's. Always a compassionate leader, well repected and admired. A pillar in the community. He will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Peter Bigley
