BOLLIN

Fred A.

Fred A. Bollin, age 74, passed away Sunday,

December 15, 2013, at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. A native of Toledo, Fred was born November 19, 1939, to the late Fritz and Martha (McMurray) Bollin. He met the true love of his life, Mary Lou (Welter) Bollin at an Orphan's party at the University of Toledo in 1959 and it was love at first sight for each them. Fred and Mary Lou were married on June 16, 1962, in Toledo.

Fred Bollin had a zest for life. He didn't want to die. When he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastasized Melanoma in early June, he was determined to beat it. Per Dr. Ken Krupps's instructions, his buddies, Dick Daily, Alan Brass, Jim Sherman and Lee Wessleman all took turns driving Fred and Mary Lou to the Cancer Center at the University of Michigan for a cutting edge treatment protocol.

Fred was not bitter, and never said 'why me?' He was more worried about the younger patients at the center and how they were doing and was in awe of Dr. Christopher Lau, the melanoma specialist. Dr. Lau asked Fred to speak at a doctor and patient educational symposium called AIM at Melanoma, where the Promise of new Treatments in Metastatic Melanoma was the topic of discussion. Fred did such a great job he was called "Mr. Hollywood" by the doctors attending the event.

Fred graduated from Waite High School, where he has since received the Distinguished Alumni Award, and went on to earn his Bachelor of Education in 1962 and Master's degree in 1969 from the University of Toledo. He worked as a Corporate Systems Manager with Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation for several years, before becoming a partner with Ernst and Young LLP, where he had more than 200 professionals working for him in both Ohio and Michigan. Following his retirement in 1998, he was contacted by so many clients that he started a

private consulting firm, F.A. Bollin and Associates Inc., where he continued to work until he become ill.

Fred was very active in the community. He served on

the Board of Trustees of ProMedica from 1998-2013; was Past President and Chairman of the B.O.D. TARTA from 1990-93; a board member of the United Way; founding team member of the Eastern Community YMCA; member of Toledo Botanical Gardens; treasurer of Stone Oak Village Association and a member of Toledo Museum of Art. He was also a member of The Toledo Zoo, where he headed a five-person leadership team that revitalized the zoo, for which he was later honored. Fred was a founding member of the Oregon Jaycees and was very involved with Stone Oak Country Club including

serving as Chairman on the Board of Governors, Social Committee and Vice President. Fred was a supporting member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Waite High School, University of Toledo, United Way, and the Adopt America Network. Fred was also a member of the Wildwood Orthopedic and Spine Hospital Board of Directors.

Fred was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, serving overseas and receiving top security clearance in the Signal Corps 12th

Calvary Infantry Division, Korea. He was a member of the American Legion.

Fred enjoyed traveling to Florida and Colorado to visit his children and grandchildren. He was an avid boater and fisherman, especially in Lake Erie and the Florida Gulf Coast with family and friends, and loved to golf with his wife and friends at Stone Oak. Fred and Mary Lou also enjoyed trips to

Ireland, Scotland, Alaska and Florida with their friends. He loved birding, building

Bluebird houses and feeders, watching hummingbirds, playing cards and games and was an avid supporter and follower of UT sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes. While at UT, Fred was a member

of the Theta Chi Fraternity, ROTC and Scabbard and Blade. Fred kept close ties with his Theta Chi brothers and his ROTC buddies. They meet weekly on Monday nights at Loma Linda's.

Fred is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary Lou; son, Fred M. Bollin (Stephany) of Denver, CO; daughter, Kristina Kelso (Paul) of Boca Raton, FL; grandchildren, McKenna Bollin, Jake and Tatum Kelso; brother, Ed Bollin (Bonnie), and sisters-in-law, Karen and JoAnn Welter. Fred was a wonderful husband and an amazing father and grandfather. He was also a cherished friend and

mentor of many.

Memorial services to celebrate Fred's extraordinary life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013, at Epworth United Methodist Church with military honors accorded by the U.S. Army. Friends are invited to begin visiting the family at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon and gathering at Stone Oak Country Club will immediately follow all services in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Toledo Waite High School Scholarship Fund (301 Morrison Dr., Toledo, OH 43605), The Toledo Zoo Aquarium Fund (P.O. Box 140130, Toledo, OH 43614-0130) or Epworth United Methodist Church (4855 W. Central Ave, Toledo, OH 43615).

Arrangements are under the direction of the Walker Funeral Home, (419) 841-2422.

Mary Lou and family: I am incredibly sad to learn of Fred's passing. But we'll all get to see him again one day. I will alway cherish my time with Fred in our EY Toledo days and I will always remember him as one the the great and influential leaders in my life. I think I learned more from him in the 5 years there than anywhere else. He taught me how to think and how to communicate. I still hear him in my head today. "But what are you trying to say Fisher?" :) I still have a picture of him in our kitchen in Swanton when you all came out for my birthday. I think he had the biggest grin of all. He was a great man, a great business man, and great leader and a wonderful friend. To say we miss him is an understatement. Best to you all....Jeff

Dear Mary Lou
Fred ran the race - completed it and is now enjoying peace beyond all understanding. The many memories of meetings at Stone Oak in it's beginning and his help in making the club what it is today. I'm sure you will never forget all the tales that were told of the fun that was had on the wonderful golf trip to St Andrews.

Mary Lou,
I got the chance to see Fred at the UT Theta Chi event this past October. We had a great conversation and it had probably been close to 50 years since we last talked. We picked right up like it had been only a week since we last saw each other. He was a great guy.

Fred was a very intelligent, giving and loving man who spent 8 years as a founding board member of the ProMedica Continuing Care Corporation. His guidance and financial acumen was instrumental in getting a new company "off the ground." He never stopped caring about people and the impact he had on my life will be imprinted on my heart forever. Looking forward to seeing you in Heaven.

I met Fred at UT. We both served in the US ARMY, stationed in Korea. I only met him once, while there, but he gave me a message to relay to Mary Lou. I had not seen Fred until UT Homecoming in 2012.
We never got the time to re-connect. May your memories bring you comfort at this time.
