Fred Hertz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 5 to Jun. 6, 2006.
Fred Hertz 12/04/26 ~ 06/03/06 Fleeing the planned ravages of Hitler's Germany against its native Jewish population, a young 12 year old Fred Hertz, along with his grandmother, a younger brother, his mother and father-a family sponsored by a Senator from the State of Georgia-followed a winding route in 1938 through Austria and Harbin, China to a new life and the freedom of America. An immigrant American, an American Soldier, an American businessman, Fred Hertz, ended his struggle from repeated strokes and Alzheimer's disease, Saturday June 3, 2006, in the presence and embrace of his wife, Shirlee, and his two daughters, Alison Hertz and Shauna Hertz Carpenter. Born in Ohringen, Germany, December 4, 1926, to Charlotte "Lotte" and Alfred Hertz, the family journey to America concluded in Salt Lake City, where they joined Fred's beloved uncle, Eugene Hertz. A product of the Salt Lake City School system, attended the University of Utah, and a World War II American soldier in the Pacific Theater. Fred spent more than forty years in sales and administration with the Jordan Meat Company of Salt Lake City, retiring six years ago. He was active in and a past president of the Western Meat Packers' Association. Legions of customers throughout the Mountain West were counted as his personal friends. Married to Shirlee Guss Hertz January 4, 1959, Fred lived his life with gusto, honesty and loyalty. Never reluctant to speak out, he stood his ground and voiced his opinions, popular or otherwise. A loving and concerned father and husband, his time was well spent caring for his family. In his stronger days, he expressed great pleasure in hitting the ski slopes on a blue bird day, or sharing with a good friend a round of golf. University of Utah football was, for Fred, a special passion. Fred was a life long member of Congregation Montifiore and its successor Congregation Kol Ami, where in times of good health and vigor, he was faithful in attendance. Fred is survived by his wife, Shirlee; their two daughters, Alison Hertz and Shauna (Johnny) Carpenter; and super grandson, Justin Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and uncle. Fred's family expresses their appreciation to Harold and Oscar as well as to the staff of Care Source, who made the final days as comfortable as possible. Graveside services will be held Tuesday June 6, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at Montifiore Cemetery, 4th Avenue and "R" Street. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Vivian Guss Shapiro Library fund at Congregation Kol Ami, 2425 Heritage Way, Salt Lake City, 84109, would be appreciated. Funeral directors, Evans & Early Mortuary.

To the Hertz family,

Please accept my sympathies and condolences at the passing of Fred. I worked with Fred at Jordan Meat for a few years. His sense of humor, good natured personality and devotion to Utah football were a source of great conversation. Knowing him has made my life a bit better. Please take comfort in celebrating his life at this difficult time.
