Obituary:

Fremont Benedict "Monty" Stewart, Jr., age 80, of Reedsport, Oregon, passed away at home on May 24, 2024. He was born on August 7, 1943, in Highland Park, MI.

Monty's priority was his family. He loved Jeanne, his wife of 50 years, and his son, Del, and his daughter, Dorie. His love for his kid sisters Gloria and Patricia was without compare; and he could talk with them for hours on end. He was preceded in death by his father Fremont B. Stewart and mother Edith A. Aanerud.

After God, family, and country, Monty's greatest love was bacon. He loved the Sunday brunch at the Adobe restaurant in Yachats mainly for their bacon. He would rate restaurants by the quality of their bacon and whether or not they served real butter.

Monty grew up in Detroit and was always proud of his Michigan roots. After graduating from Grosse Ile High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961. He was proud to serve in SAC, the Strategic Air Command at March Air Force Base in California. He was stationed in Alaska during the 1964 9.2 magnitude earthquake.

When he left the Air Force, Monty went home to Michigan to work at Ford Motor Company, where both his dad and grandfather had worked for many years. In the early 1970's he moved back to California, this time to San Diego. There he met the love of his life, Jeanne, and proposed to her by saying "I'd rather call you my wife than my girlfriend." He graduated from San Diego State University with his BA in English, and a minor in Philosophy. He owned a 1967 maroon Mustang convertible with a black rag top that he bought used for $500-…until it was totaled by someone driving too fast on the street where it was parked.

Monty sold real estate and then, harkening back to his days at Ford, he sold industrial equipment to machine shops. He was co-owner of J.P. Machine Tool Sales, Inc. which sold mills, lathes, and other metal-working tools. He continued his education at National University and received his MBA. He was baptized in the early 2000's at Grace Lutheran Church in Escondido. In 2005, he and Jeanne moved to Reedsport, Oregon to help care for his elderly mother, Edith Ann.

Monty was a conservative; and was a volunteer for the Republican party in Douglas County, and a member of Gideon's International.
Monty enjoyed photography and frequently had slide shows of the places where he and his wife had travelled. He loved fly-fishing in Montana, and deep-sea fishing in Cabo. He always loved to read, was especially interested in American history and politics. He loved listening to Rush Limbaugh and Mark Steyn; but going on a Steyn cruise was, unfortunately, still left on his bucket list.

He is sorely missed.

A memorial service in honor of Monty will be held at Dunes Memorial Chapel at 2300 Frontage Rd. in Reedsport, OR on Saturday, June 15,2024 at 1pm.
