I have so many memories of growing up with Gabe in Greeley, Colorado. He was really good at math and frequently tutored me in algebra at my dining room table. Those were serious moments but most of the time I remember him being silly. One time in 9th grade he dyed a platinum blonde circle of hair at the crown of his head -- it looked like a cap (or a halo!?). He was a great friend - always there to support. I haven't seen him much in recent years but he will always be in my heart. Love you, Gabe Max.

I lost my son-in-law Gabe but I take comfort in knowing he is reunited again with my son Kevin and they are at peace together in heaven. God rest his soul, great guy, life of the party.

One of my fondest memories of Gabe was when he was a student of mine in Franklin Middle school. He had just completed a standardized test and he asked me to explain one of the questions. No student ever did that. Most were just happy to be done with the test. But Gabe was such a sponge for learning. He didn't just want the right answer. He wanted to understand the question and the answer. He was a delight to have in my 6 &7 grade classroom. I am not surprised by any of the great tributes to him. He was such a joy! Still think of that guy often.

So lucky to have Gabe as my brother in law, even more fortunate to have him as my friend. Gabe had the biggest heart, hug, smile, and laugh. All of which will remain with me always. Words usually always come easy for me, but not now... not this time. I was lucky enough to literally work side by side with Gabe for many years, and I couldn't begin to count the days and hours he brightened, the workaday tasks he made enjoyable simply by being there, the private jokes and yes, even the multitude of insults and nicknames for one another that we so lovingly shared throughout that time. Even now -- writing this -- it seems unreal to think of him as gone, but his memory -- and the smiles his memory provokes -- even the sound of his voice, will remain with me always.

The loss of Gabriel, was the loss of a brother , and a friend . I will miss him more than my heart can say . Ironically he helped me learn how to grieve. He sent me a poem when Kevin passed. The poem was called Death is nothing at all . I would like to share an excerpt with you .
"Speak of me in the easy way you always used to. Put no difference in your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Let it be spoke without effort or the shadow of a ghost upon it . Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together".
In the near future when I speak of Gabriel, and Kevin it will be without a shadow . It will be with the joy and light that lives well lived , and loved will bring .

This Jack Kerouac quote sums up everything about Gabe for me:
"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars."
To me, Gabe was the maddest, most fabulous roman candle to ever exist. The 32 years I had him in my life will be cherished forever.

Gabe was one of a kind, a larger-than-life character who brought joy and good times wherever he went...and he went everywhere. Gabe´s love of travel illustrates who he was as a person: someone who loved life, loved meeting new people, and loved experiencing all that life had to offer. I feel lucky to have known him.
