Family-Placed Death Notice

UMBERGER, Garland Garland Grey Umberger, Jr., of Covington, passed away February 17, 2008. He was born June 30, 1934, in Wytheville, Virginia, to the late Garland Grey Umberger and Mildred Louise Jennings Umberger. He graduated from O'Keefe High School, studied English at Emory University and GSU. Later he earned a business degree from Oglethorpe University and worked as an accountant until his retirement. In 1954, he married Ann Carol Granger. Grey's interests included art, reading, old houses, horseback riding, classical music, and crossword puzzles. Survivors include brother Gary Michael Umberger and sister-in-law Martha Harb Umberger of Dunwoody; son Steven Michael Umberger and daughter-in-law Bonnie Nance Umberger of Newnan; daughter Leslie Grey Umberger Zakos and son-in-law Nicholas Zakos of Lilburn; niece Dori Michelsen of Alpharetta; and nephews Keith Umberger of Smyrna and Jeffrey Umberger of Atlanta. His dearly loved grandchildren include Matthew Zakos, Katharine Zakos, Michael Umberger, Andrew Zakos, Carrie Umberger, and Nicholas Zakos. Grey also leaves behind a great- niece and a great-nephew as well as Hazel Owens, a lifelong friend of his family. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Newnan, GA, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Rev. Hunt Priest will officiate. Family will receive friends at 9:30AM in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atlanta Humane Society.
