George Crawford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 20 to Jan. 21, 2006.
George Alin Crawford, age 59, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Laura Ann, in Albuquerque, NM, with his son, Christopher and brother, Tom also at his side. Born October 25, 1946, he was the eldest son of the late George and Nila Crawford.
George was a graduate of Start High School and the University of Toledo. He retired in April 2005 from Local 50 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union after 32 years of service as a skilled trades welder. All of his co-workers knew him as the "Atomic Dog". He enjoyed reading, music, poetry, art, movies and concerts. He enjoyed eating good food at all types of restaurants in the company of his friend, Angie Crayon.
Throughout his life, George was immersed in physical culture. He won the Mr. Toledo bodybuilding competition in 1966, and was named an AAU All-American in 1971. Powerlifting, however, was his specialty, where he was a Collegiate, Junior, Senior, National, and World champion. George set 15 American records and five World records in squat, with his best effort of 705 pounds. He was nominated into the Toledo Powerlifting Hall of Fame in 1984.
He is survived by his son, G. Christopher Crawford (Emily) of Fairfield, OH; daughter, Laura Ann Crawford (Daniel Westbury, M.D.), Albuquerque, NM; grandsons, Stephen, Bailey, Wesley, Adam and Samuel; sister, Sharon Dela-Hamaide (Perry) of Perrysburg; brother, Thomas (Diane) of Columbus, OH, and the mother of his children, Patricia Gilliam.
A memorial service will be held at Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 50, 7570 Caple Blvd., Northwood, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 22. A memorial fund has been established at Local 50 Credit Union. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to [email protected] or [email protected]

I was a very good friend of Nila, and got the pleasure to know Bud when he stayed with his mom the last couple years of her life. I was so sad to hear of his passing, as I haven't seen him since his mom passed and I didn't know he was ill. I will always remember our little chats about his work and movies. He loved going out to eat, or some special event in Detroit and, of course, his movies. He also was always on the go, and had his cute hats on !! He had some tough times, but was always a giving person. He loved his family, and my prayers will be with all.

I first met George at the Marion YMCA in Marion, IN on 11/20/65. On that day we competed against each other in a teen-age weightlifting competition. During the next several years I would see him at competitions and also during the summer of 1968 when we trained together in Bob Matz's garage in Toledo. Later, I would read and hear of George's many record-breaking performances in the sport of powerlifting. In 1993 we met again at a Hall of Fame induction ceremony at a gym in Toledo and shared war stories. "Georgie" leaves me with many fond recollections from our younger years, memories of optimism, friendship and unbounded strength. George is a legend in powerlifting; I'm sure that I join countless others in the strength sport community as I pause to honor his memory.

I was very sorry to read in the Toledo Blade obits that George had passed. He was a good person that I had the the honor to know and work with as a member of Local 50. He always made all who knew him laugh and feel good. He will be missed by all who were touched by his short life here with us. He is now at peace.

Bud is a special kind of guy and cared about others. Growing up with him and his brother & sister was always the "great trip" to the city for our family when I was young. He always wanted to know what was going on in the "country" where we lived. The smile on his face and in his eyes when you told him, always made you feel special in life. And now being blessed with three sons of my own who will never forget Bud & have their own great memories of him, puts closure to one of my own life's heroes. I look forward to that day of seeing Bud again & he will always be in my heart!
