NEW BEDFORD - George F. DeMello, 91 of New Bedford, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Hallmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long period of declining health.

Mr. DeMello was born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Amaral) Mello. He was the husband for 46 years of Lorraine T. (Hatch) DeMello and the former husband of the late Lilly DeMello.

He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford, employed as a machine operator for Fibre Leather Manufacturing until his retirement. He was later employed as an attendant at Lincoln Park as well as a cafeteria worker at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

He was a proud U. S. Army veteran of World War 2, attaining the rank of Private First Class. He was assigned to the Maintenance Division as an airplane engine repairman. His many decorations include The American Theater Campaign Ribbon, The World War 2 Victory Medal and The European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

His hobbies include fishing as well as watching all sports and was a member of the Central Cafe Club.

His family includes his wife: Lorraine T. (Hatch) DeMello of New Bedford; 3 Sons: Robert DeMello of Thousand Oaks, California, Wayne DeMello and his wife Christine of Fairhaven & Barry DeMello and his wife Tammy of Fairhaven; 4 Grandchildren: Melissa DeMello, Jessica DeMello, Cameron DeMello & Connor DeMello; 2 Great-Grandchildren Jason and Mackenzie; Several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gilbert and Arthur Mello.

His funeral will be conducted Tuesday morning at 8:45 with a Mass to be celebrated in St. Julie Billiart Church at 10:00. Visiting hours Monday 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00. Interment with military honors in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Animal Rescue League of New Bedford, 31 Ventura Dr., Dartmouth, MA 02747.

Tia Lorraine,

Even though I didn't know T. George well, I cherish the memories of visiting him in the hospital. Now is the time to celebrate his life and thank god he is now in a beautiful place. I am sorry for your loss but happy to know he is in a better place.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your family was such a big part of my life for a long time,a long time ago. Even though it's been many years since I have seen or talked to your family,I was very saddened to here about the passing of Mr.D.
