George Grace Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2018.
George C. Grace passed away peacefully at Lahey, Burlington after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family, on September, 7, 2018. Born in Gloucester on January 23, 1937 to the late Joseph Carlton Grace and Jenny (Mallette) Grace. George was the loving husband of Francesca (Piscitello) Grace with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. A devoted father and grandfather, George never missed an opportunity to express his pride for his family, showing pictures and videos to all who visited. George was a life- long resident of Gloucester. A friendly and outgoing man, he was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Stanley Court." George watched out for his neighbors, his friends and his family, always willing to lend a hand or tell a joke. His sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. George worked at Mighty Mac for over 20 years and at Varian for 20 years. Upon retirement, George became the caretaker for two Eastern Point Estates. He became well known to the residents of Eastern Point and would regularly stop and chat. George loved cooking, good naturedly posting pictures of his culinary delights on Facebook under the name "Brother George." He loved country music, often listening to it and watching the Grand Ole Opry. Although he never displayed his work, George was a talented artist painting landscapes and scenes of Gloucester. George also enjoyed backyard gardening. In addition to his wife Francesca, George is survived by his son Gregg, husband to Marjorie (Bagley), of Gloucester; daughter Brenda (Grace) Laino, wife to Steven, of Staten Island, NY; son John, husband to Patrice (O'Sullivan), of Raynham, Ma; grandchildren Alexandra Grace, Annabella Grace, Cora Grace, Arielle Laino and Alexis Laino. He is also survived by his brother James Grace; sister-in-law Estella Grace; nephew Carlton Grace, Jr, husband to Angela, and a large extended family. George was predeceased by his brother, Carlton Grace, of Gloucester. All who knew George would tell you he was a feisty, funny and intelligent man. He will be missed by all. The "Mayor" will now watch over us all from above and will undoubtedly have heaven in stitches. George's visiting hours will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St. Gloucester on Tuesday evening, September 11, 2018 from 4-7 PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St. Gloucester on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at 12:00 noon. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family are appreciated.

In my search of former Varian / Extrion employees, George was on top of the list. I was only in my early twenties and found myself in the awkward position (for both of us!) of being his "supervisor" in an epoxy casting lab. George was at least 13 years older than I. He was an extraordinary fun guy to be around and expressed so much love for his family and community. He used to tell me about his piecework job at Mighty Mac. He was a very responsible, hard worker who made a lasting impression on me. My best to his family.
