GEORGE HACKER Obituary
of New York, London and most recently Scottsdale, Arizona passed away on June 11, 2017 while on holiday in the United Kingdom, at the age of 81. A proud graduate of Amherst College (Class of 1957), he enjoyed a full and successful life as a newspaperman, a teacher at Columbia University, an investment banker and as a managing director in New York and London. George was a generous and genial man; loved and admired by many and large in both heart and spirit. He will be greatly missed by many: especially his five children, two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, two grandchildren as well as family members and close family friends. A celebration of life will be held at a yet to be determined date. At George's request, in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in his memory.

Although it is three years, George, since your passing, I still think you often. Although you lived in the UK for over 30 years, you were a wonderful Ambassador for the USA. I remember the time when you asked me to sign your papers to become a British Citizen and having dual Nationality. It was a privilege. I will always remember our friendship, your humour and laughter.

For 4yrs. you and I shared coffee almost daily whilst in Stratford-upon-Avon. I'm delighted that we also shared several glasses of wine, usually from your excellent wine cellar, which resulted in lengthy, amusing, happy and memorable conversations. I feel honoured to have shared those good times with you over 4 years. Goodbye my dear friend. I miss you already as does Russell. xxx

FOR GEORGE HACKER, AMHERST '57
Another college classmate died today,
A man I had sat with and listened to
Less than a month ago. He slept
In a chair after breakfast in the dorm
Common room where the reunioners
Were housed. I didn't know him well
But remembered his immense energy,
His size, and his zest for a successful
Business deal. Frankly, he scared me,
So intense his life force I could see.
Too young we all were for World War Two,
But still aware of the army's sharp scythe.
Sixty years ago it was the unspoken
Question of us all. What about the draft?
Some went in immediately, others after
Medical school, others served in other ways
Ordination, graduate school, teaching,
Or conscious objector's bed pan duty
In green scrubs deep within a hospital's bowels.
But Muscat glowed with warrior style.
Unlike the three hundred at Thermopylae
We have not changed the course of history,
Saving freedom and individualism from
Trampling by the Persian tyrant's hoards.
But in our own quiet way we went in flesh
And spirit on the Freedom Rider's Summer,
Saw the sense of No More War, endured
With steadiness as strong as any the riots,
The assassinations, the wavering flame of hope,
Upholding silently the matrix of civil society.
Our uniform, blue blazer with buttons of brass.
Now our charmed circle of love is shrunk by one.
Eventually it will be down to few, then none
Of the cohort of potential with which we begun.
Did we live well? George, by reports, you had fun.
With zest and bright minds we made our run
From Valentine to chapel, soldiers, doctors, lawyers,
Painters, poets, priests, scholars, actors, teachers,
Raising families likewise working to keep justice to alive,
And, as you and we, help the gods of excellence thrive.

George, you have such a big heart and our friendship meant a lot to both of us. You used to call me friend and that is exactly how I felt. I will miss you. I will miss our chats and conversations. You enriched my life, indeed. I especially liked our conversations about Jesus and heaven. I will see you in heaven one day. Until then, you will be greatly missed.
