Reynolds, George Ray, age 87 of Warrior, Alabama, formerly of Birmingham, Alabama died peacefully at his home April 26, 2016. George grew up in Pratt City where he attended Pratt Elementary and Ensley High School. He also attended Marion Military Academy, Auburn University and graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. He served in the United States Army Reserve JAG Corps where he attained the rank of Colonel. One of his greatest joys was serving his country and having the opportunity to train and educate young lawyers under his command. Following his retirement from his position with the JAG Corps, he received the 2013 Rowe Bank Award presented to him based upon his lifetime of service to the public and his country. He practiced law in Birmingham, Alabama for 20 years from 1953 to 1974. In 1974, he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the office of Jefferson County District Court Judge. He was elected to a second term as a District Court Judge. In 1980, he was appointed to serve in the newly created position as Probate Judge #2 for Jefferson County, Alabama where his focus was handling commitment proceedings and managing elections. He was later appointed to fill the position of #1 Probate Judge of Jefferson County where he served until his retirement at the age of 70 in 2000. He will be remembered by those parties who came before him and the attorneys practicing in his court as a Judge who was fair and treated everyone with respect giving all participants a fair opportunity to present their case. The attorneys who practiced in his court will remember him as a Judge who freely offered guidance, shared his knowledge of the law with practical solutions to their address clients’ problems and had a quick wit and an amusing story to tell. He served as Deacon for many years at his church, Crestway Baptist Church and later was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church and Green Valley Baptist Church. He demonstrated his faith daily in the manner he encountered and addressed others. George Reynolds was approachable by all people with his kind and friendly manner. He treated all people as important regardless of their station in life. He gave his time and attention to people needing advice and counsel. More than anything, he was happiest when he could help others. He was genuinely a good man. George Reynolds was predeceased by his father, George W. Reynolds, his mother, Ruth Custred Reynolds, his sister, Virginia Nell Hayes and his brother, Roy S. Reynolds. He was also predeceased by his first wife and mother of his son, Faye G. My deepest condolences to all of Judge's Family. His obituary said it better than i could. I remember the very first time i ever met him , it was in the Courtroom and my partner, Patrick Boone, introduced us. I remember thinking, "Why couldn't I be like him, so genuinely friendly and down to earth ?" Well, it wasn't an act because every time after that, whether as an attorney, a District Judge, a Probate Judge or a retired Judge, he was the same kind of man that one wanted to just sit and talk to for hours. My friend, "Slim" as everyone called him, with his spirit, intelligence and caring heart would have been the best Governor, Senator or President we could have ever had. We have lost a Giant ! And i still wonder why i can't be like Judge Slim ?

Judge Reynolds was a fine person as well as a fine judge.

Judge George Reynolds was highly respected & admired by my Parents , Dorothy & Albert Read. As a child I remember my Dad saying " I'll ask "Slim" about that "
When time came for me to have a letter of recommendation to The Alabama State Bar , my Dad & I went to Judge Reynolds office to request his assistance. He graciously agreed to write the letter. This was wholly based on the friendship he had w/ my parents . My deepest gratitude to the Honorable George Reynolds for the friendship & fellowship he shared w/ my parents .
The first cases I ever had as a new Attorney were in Judge Reynolds court.
I had to do well for my client , my parents & Judge Reynolds. I have never been more afraid , Judge Reynolds could see the terror I had , he said " Lisa , you have prepared , and you have done your best , right ? . There's nothing to be afraid of but me, the smile he had gave me reassurance & I proceeded.
My Mom , Dorothy Read died in Jan. of 2016. My Dad will be there in spirit . The stories of " Slim " brought my Dad great joy. He admired this fine Man immensely . I think I will try to talk w/ him and possibly recall some of their days as fellow deacons, friends & honest men.

Judge Reynolds was truly a sincere and honest man. Although rich in brilliance and statute, he treated everyone with the same kindness and courtesy. The world has truly lost a great person and heaven has gained a wonderful soul. It was an honor to have known and worked under such a kind and thoughtful man. May God grant his family the blessed peace that only He can give. Know that the prayers of his many friends and acquaintances are with you during this time and in the days to follow.

I was so sad to hear about the death of George Ray. He was kind enough to give me a summer job working in his first law office many years ago. Although I didn't see him often over the years, I'LL never forget him.
