I never met George Sarkis. My brother/friend Marc Berner would call him whenever he came up from Florida. Marc told me that GS worked on all the greats horns: Bird, Trane the list is a who's who of the history of jazz saxophone. About a year ago, I was into the music of Louis Jordan and I read that in the late '40s or early '50s Jordan lived in Philly. I figured that George might have known him or done some work on his sax so I called him. I'm a guitar player and I restore pianos. I'm talking with George as a fellow instrument repair person and music enthusiast. I'm asking him about Louis Jordan and have a hard time understanding him because of the damage done as a result of a stroke he had some years back. Through our conversation he tells me that in fact he had worked on Jordan's horn. Although I can't make out much of what he was saying, I feel his genuine love for the music and our conversation. I never met him; but I will miss him especially for my friend, Marc.
