Gerald Turner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2018.
Turner, Gerald R. Attorney Gerald "Jerry" Turner passed away in Mequon, Wisconsin at the age of 78. Growing up on what he called the "rough-and-tumble streets" of the north side of Chicago near Wrigley Field, Jerry quickly honed his fighting skills. Finding a passion for boxing early on, Jerry would go on to train under the great Tony Zale. His boxing travels led him to San Antonio, where after two years, he had all but decided to go pro. Learning of UW-Madison's boxing program through a friend, Jerry applied and received a boxing scholarship. During the team's 1960 championship run, Jerry earned his individual NCAA Championship after a deciding split-decision victory, but watched in horror as his friend and teammate, Charlie Mohr, entered the dressing room and collapsed. Soon thereafter, Mohr passed away and the boxing program ended. In turn, Jerry fought to retain his scholarship, and completed his time at UW-Madison with a master's degree in social work. He went on to become a probation officer in Milwaukee, working with at-risk youth, diverting them to boxing gyms to build character and confidence. His educational and boxing endeavors did not end there. Jerry realized that to have a powerful voice in the lives of the children he served he needed to go to law school. While attending Marquette University Law School, he also fulfilled his professional boxing dream, winning all six of his matches. After graduating in 1969, most of his fights took place in the courtroom. As a litigator, Jerry represented thousands of clients, including the indigent and underserved in pro bono cases. Jerry continued fighting until he lost his final match on May 10, 2018. He is survived by his six children and 12 grandchildren. A special thanks to Dr. Christopher Budny for the excellent care provided to Jerry throughout the years. A private gathering was held by the family, and a celebration of Jerry's life will be planned in the future.

Here it is, come full circle again, another year since Jerry´s been gone, this one 7. But memories keep alive those never forgettable times we shared as teens, sometimes doing together the most risky & craziest of things. And then laughing afterward, once we survived. So many of these, in my permanent file with you. Thanks again Jerry. Ed

Glad to see note from former boxing teammate of Jerry’s, Wally DeRose. Just want to add that Jerry also wanted to try out for the Olympics in the mid fifties when it would be held in Melbourne in the summer of 1956. Like Wally, I have no doubt he would have made the team as a welterweight had he gone ahead. Ed Coben

Jerry and I were roommates and boxing teammates. Just learned of his passing. Last contact was when attended my wedding reception in 1986. We traveled together on boxing trips with the team and were very close. More so when our friend and teammate Charles Mohr died dung the NCAA boxing finals inn 1960. Jerry and I had many fine experiences together. There is no doubt he would have made the Olympic boxing team had it not been for the demise of college boxing. Shocked at his passing. Great friend and athlete. My condolences to his family.

Jerry’s light will never dim for those who knew him well. And he will always be “Forever Young.”

Gerry one of my older friends. I also I grew up on the Northside of Chicago. We graduate the same grade school and I still I consider him a good friend. I'm a retired DEA agent living in South Texas where I've been for the last 35 years. I just heard about Jerry from a friend of mine named Arvid. God bless and take care.

Jerry, your memories live in those still here. For us as teens, there are so many, all from those years we spent in the thrill of the chase. And you, the one who was always ahead. And still remain there.

Jerry literally changed my life for the better. In 1967 I had run away from home at 15 and was traveling down dangerous paths. Jerry became my probation officer and I looked forward each week to the long bus ride to sit with him and talk openly and freely about life, with his super acceptance and guidance. He knew I wasn't a boxer, yet he gave me strength, confidence and courage to face life and my problems. He was a super role model I had never had. I have thought of him often through my long, good life and thanked God for his caring and skilled goodness. May you live eternally in joy and light. Thank you.

I tried to send message this morning but apparently didn't send, so will try again. Have thought about Jerry often over the years, always intending to locate him so we can talk, catch up after so long. He came to San Antonio from Chicago at 16, & we quickly became best friends, doing crazy things together & miraculously surviving. To call him fearless, whether in or out of the ring, would be a big time understatement. But if I knew anything in those foolish early years, it was this: I could always count on him to be there alongside. He'd be the last to run away. Years later, I was there beside him as his best man when he married Roz. As the years went by, we lost touch. One of life's biggest regrets is waiting too long to do what you intend to do. Gabe, if you or Noah can be in touch with me, i'd sure appreciate it. Am so, so sorry to find this out. My very best to the whole family. Ed Coben

Those we love and lose are always connected by heartstrings into infinity.

Jerry, I will always cherish the times we spent together. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and smile. You will always have a special place in my heart and I am a better person for having known you.

Jerry,

You were a great friend, legal mentor, law partner, and the most courageous patient I ever cared for. You fought right up until the tenth round and exited the ring with grace. You will be dearly missed, but always remembered as a champion for justice. May God bless you and keep you in the palm of his hand. Julie
