Gertrude "Trudy" Shaw Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2025.
Gertrude "Trudy" M. Shaw, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, and soon-to-be great-grandma passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, in Bloomington, IN. She was 94.

Trudy, daughter of Harold Taylor McCullough and Frances Robins McCullough, was born on April 28, 1931, in Shelbyville, IN and her early years were spent in Crawfordsville, IN. During World War II, her father's service in the U.S. Army took the family to Gulfport, MS; Pineville, LA; and Brownwood, TX, before returning to Crawfordsville where Trudy graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1948.

She earned a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1952. While at Miami, Trudy served as a sophomore counselor, was a member of the sophomore honorary SWEN, and joined Delta Zeta Sorority. She began her teaching career in the Indianapolis Public Schools, where she taught from 1952 to 1956.

On July 11, 1954, Trudy married Tully C. Shaw of Crawfordsville. The couple lived in Indianapolis before settling in Bloomington in 1962, where they built a life rooted in family, faith, and community.

Trudy earned her master's degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University in 1972. She and Tully co-owned Bloomington Cyclery from 1971 to 1988, where Trudy managed the business's finances with care and dedication.

A devoted member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church for over 63 years, Trudy's faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She served as the church's first nursery school director, taught Sunday school, coordinated kindergarten programs, and was a passionate supporter of Operation Friendship and other St. Marks youth programming. She was a member of St. Mark's Quilters. Trudy cherished the inclusive and loving fellowship of St. Mark's, attending services faithfully-whether in person or via her iPad.

Trudy was an active member of United Methodist Women, holding leadership positions in both the Bloomington District and the South Indiana Conference.

Trudy was preceded in death by her parents, and then her husband, Tully, in 2016. She is survived by her children: David Shaw (Alesia) of Denton, TX; Susan Watson (Trent) of Glendale, AZ; and Sarah Morgan (John) of Madison, OH. She was a proud and loving grandmother to four granddaughters: Stephanie Watson of Arlington, VA; Elaine Watson (Jason Perone) of Scottsdale, AZ; Jacqueline McCready (James McCready) of East Aurora, NY; and Kate Morgan (Greg Lawrence) of Pittsburgh, PA.

Trudy touched the lives of many with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those she inspired throughout her 94 remarkable years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 North State Rd 46, Bloomington, IN 47408 on Monday, August 4th at 2:00 PM, followed by a gathering to honor and remember Trudy's extraordinary life. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church or Pathways (formerly Monroe County United Ministries).
