Gertrude Yates Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2012.
The family of Gertrude Yowell Hudson-Yates mourns her passing on August 28, 2012 at the Virginia Baptist Home whose team graciously assisted her family with her care over the past several months.

Born December 10, 1930 she was the last surviving child of the late Lamon Cecil and Ida Rider Yowell. She is predeceased by her daughter, Anne Hudson, who died in a horse accident on the family farm, Grattan Hall, in 1969 and the father of her children, Ernest Hudson.

A lifelong member of the Culpeper Baptist Church, she served on various committees, taught Sunday School and enjoyed her role as an Usher. Her civic interests included the Culpeper Choral Society, the American Cancer Society, and the American Heart Association. Mrs. Hudson-Yates was an Electoral Judge and served for many years on the County's Social Services Board. In 1999, she was honored as a Culpeper Colonel.

Mrs. Hudson-Yates operated the H and W Restaurant, standing for Hudson and Wife. The H & W was home of Culpeper's famous "PIG", which now fosters the PIG Legacy, standing for People Interested in Good which honors her eagerness to be an engaged citizen leader through civic engagement and volunteerism. Mrs. Hudson-Yates also enjoyed her career with the Virginia State Police, from which she developed many life long friendships.

Mrs. Hudson-Yates is survived by her three daughters and their husbands: Lynne and Dave Richardson and Page and Jimmy Timberlake of Culpeper; and Hope and Corey Cather of Berryville, VA. She is also survived by her son and his wife, Drew and Risa Hudson, of Annapolis, MD.
Mrs. Hudson-Yates enjoyed her eight grandchildren: Worth and Anne Richardson; Katy and Chelsea Best, Andrew Cather; and, Hannah, Trett and Ben Hudson. She is also survived by a great grandson, Tristan, and a host of nieces and nephews, along with Gail Simmons Brown, her devoted niece.

Her surviving in-laws include Bertha Hudson Yowell and Catherine Hudson Stelock of Orange, VA, Ruth Hudson Irvin of Charles Town, WVA and Festus Hudson, Jr. of Nethers, Virginia.

Mrs. Hudson-Yates is also survived by her husband, C.F. Yates, Jr., his children, grandchildren and great grandchild.

In lieu of flowers her family encourages tributes to the Gertrude Hudson Yates Scholarship Fund at Germanna Community College, which was established by her children on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Remembrances should be made out to the "GCC Educational Foundation" and mailed to the college at 2130 Germanna Highway, Locust Grove, VA 22508. On-line contributions can be made at www.germanna.edu/edfoundation.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, August 31 at the Salem Baptist Church, 8233 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hudson Yates will be held at her beloved Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 South West Street, Culpeper, Virginia at 10:30AM on Saturday, September 1, 2012 with the Reverend John S. Farrar officiating, he will be assisted by the Reverends Mike Dodson and Randy Orndorff.

Gertrude was my cousin, my mother (Grace Rider Smith) is her mother's youngest sister. I feel we grew up together and my sister Joan and I loved
to spend time with her. She will remain in my memory the vibrant and active
person she was in life. Many good wishes to her family and those many
who called her their friend.
