Glen Loeber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2024.
Glen Loeber, 82, passed away peacefully on the morning of March 13, 2024 with both of his daughters by his side.

Glen was born in New York, NY on July 17, 1941, but was raised in New Orleans, LA after the age of two. He grew up in Mid-City and attended Holy Rosary. Glen met his wife, Charlene, on Mardi Gras Day, March 1, 1960. On May 31, 1963, they were married. He started his career as a Merchant Marine with the Seafarers International Union in 1961. This took him to port cities around the world during a time when international travel was not as easily accessible as it is today. While Glen never served in the armed forces, he traveled to Vietnam several times aboard ships delivering goods to the servicemen stationed there. From 1986-1999 He worked aboard the Agol-class vehicle cargo ship, USNS Pollux, and worked his way from third assistant engineer to chief engineer. Notably, the Pollux took part in the Persian Gulf War, the Mogadishu Conflict, and War Games in South Korea during Glen's tenure. He finished his career working as a relief engineer on the Great Lakes before retiring in 2005. Glen enjoyed many hobbies in his younger years, including flying Cessna airplanes with his private pilot's license, fishing, building model airplanes, karate, competitive fast-draw shooting, and riding motorcycles. He was an active member of the Catholic Church, and above all else, he loved his family.

Glen is preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Loeber, and stepfather, Vincent Asaro.

Glen is survived by his wife, Charlene Loeber, his two daughters, Glennis Loeber Ritter (Daniel) and Gretchen Rochelle Loeber, granddaughters Landis Rene Kuhn and Sara Elise Kuhn, sister Marian Freeman, niece Holli Freeman, and his beloved cat Zorro.

The Loeber family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Alfred Colfry, Dr. William Rolston, Dr. David Pollet, the nursing staff at EJGH, Passages Hospice, and the staff at Peristyle Assisted Living for the compassionate care they provided during the last six months of this difficult journey.

Visitation will be Friday March 22nd at 12 pm with service at 2 pm at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home 3827 Canal Street New Orleans, LA 70119.

When Glens daughter, Gretchen, introduced me to Glen as Bebop he started singing "Be Bop A Lula". I had never heard this song before and it made me really happy and feel special. Glen was a very sweet, kind man with a great since of humor. He will be missed. "Be Bop A Lula" will always make me think of Glen.
