Gloria Juhnke Dittman Van Ackeren Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 30, 2025.
Gloria Juhnke Dittman Van Ackeren, 81, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2025 surrounded by family.

Gloria was born on July 8, 1944 in Parkston, SD to Arnold and Frieda Juhnke. The youngest of six children, she spent her early years on the family farm scaling fences and jumping off horses in South Dakota and in Tucson, Arizona. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1962, attended Augustana College, and graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BA in 1966 and an MA in 1992.

Gloria was a secondary teacher in Iowa and Nebraska from 1966 to 1978 and then began her 25-year career at Western Iowa Tech Community College as a teacher and administrator. She retired in 2003 and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she continued to teach for Bellevue University and Southeast Community College, most recently in the ESL program. She was active in Friendship Force and in

Women's Welcome Club of Lincoln and was a member of First Lutheran Church.

In 1967 she married Arthur Dittman. They lived in Yankton, Omaha, and Sioux City, where he passed away in 1997. In 2005 she married Gene Van Ackeren in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he passed away in 2024.

Gloria was a steadfast and loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved a good laugh, a cheap beer, and to pretend to love dancing to the song "Gloria". She also loved to travel, which she did extensively later in her life. She had quick wit, a sharp mind, and an incredible ability to connect with anyone and everyone.

Gloria always put family first. She attended nearly every family event and always kept in touch with family, both immediate and extended. She especially cherished time with her grandchildren, who she helped raise in their early years. She deeply engaged with them, always making sure there was something fun to do during her many visits to Sioux City, Indianapolis, and Tucson. The time she spent with them has positively shaped their lives.

Gloria is survived by her three children: Jeremy (Shannon) of Sioux City, Jay (Susie) of Indianapolis, and Melissa (Kenneth) of Indianapolis; her beloved grandchildren: Cecelia and Ralph of Sioux City, Ellie, Mina, and Marley of Indianapolis; her sister Irene (Don) Reeb of Seward, NE, sister-in-law Darlene Juhnke, Parkston, SD, sister-in-law June Juhnke of Cape Coral, FL, and brother Arnold (Linda) of Springfield, SD,

and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Arthur and Gene, brothers Bruce and Bill and their wives, Nancy and Jeannene, brother Robert, a nephew Glenn, a niece Diann, and a great niece Gina.

Memorials may be directed to Lutheran Social Services of Lincoln, Nebraska for refugee resettlement or to a charity of your choosing.

A service will be held on Saturday, September 13, at 2:00 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA. A reception will follow at Bob Roe's Point After.

Your heart soon will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. I knew Gloria, through Friendship Force, Open World and a monthly bridge club. She was a true delight to know.

Gloria was a sweet, friendly person who was of great value to Lincoln
Friendship Force. I didn't know her well but we always had great
conversations when we met. I am sorry to hear that she died so young
because the world will miss her earnest activity and bright spirit.
Best wishes to her family. Rest in Peace, Dear Lady.

I met Gloria in Custer, SD when we worked at the Trade Winds Restaurant together. I was just a kid and she was a beautiful college girl. It was difficult not to be smitten by such a beautiful girl. She married a Custer guy in Art Dittman and we kept in touch a bit. She was a delight to know. So sad to learn of her passing. I do not know any of you but I share your loss.

Patrick and I met Gloria and Gene while they were here in Ajijic. Gloria and I hiked the trails, we shared meals and enjoyed getting together. We will remember her fondly

We have done so many things together over the past 15-20 years, I will miss her so much. She was one of my best friends.
We used to ride the bus together going to school.

I knew Gloria through the Welcome Wagon Book Club in Lincoln. What a wonderful hostess she was when we met in her beautiful home. After she moved to Sioux City, she would still occasionally drop in to discuss whatever book we'd read that month. I always enjoyed her insight, whether about the book or some other random topic we often wandered to.
She will be deeply missed.

Gloria and Gene were the first friendship force guests that my husband and I hosted in Orlando in 2012. I'm originally from Iowa and this is the gift that they gave us. I have to explain what it is to my southern friends.
She was so thoughtful. I've followed her family trips over the years on Facebook. My condolences to your wonderful family

To your family,
I met Gloria a few years ago in Tucson when she moved to the same `snowbird´ community I live at. Her kindness touched my heart and she will always be a part of my special memories. She showed me a great example of how to live life. I am so sorry for your loss, Yet I am glad that she is with Jesus now and that you can have that reassurance!
With sincere sympathy and prayers,

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our heart. And we are never ever the same" I´m sure Gloria left footprints on many of the people in her life. Proud to have been her brother-law through many of her lives journeys!

She was my dept. chair at Western Iowa Tech, and my friend. I knew that she supported my efforts, and trusted my decisions. How? Because she told me so. Typical of her behavior. I am sorry she is gone, yet I trust that she is true to her journey. Like a beautiful bell, she always rang true. Gloria, I miss you and send you love.
