Mary Hess
June 5, 2023
My father, Hamilton Hess, was a true renaissance man. He had many interests, and his greatest devotion was to his wife, Margaret, and our family. He loved his vegetable garden, and working on projects on the properties. He and Mom took us backpacking every summer to revel in the beauty of the mountains. He was a thinker, a writer and a prominent theologian in the field of patristics. As a parent, his patience, kindness and sense of humor gave us balance. He shared a love of classical music, and all things English with my mother. They traveled extensively throughout the British Isles and France imbuing our family with an interest in world travel. Dad will always be in our hearts.

Hamilton Hess touched many students with Socratic engagement of theology, ecology, and environmental ethics. And, his loving resolve to teach the origins of Christianity in a way that encouraged open dialogue, new interpretations, and careful critiques, made the experience of faith an exciting opportunity for personal growth and maturity........ His death left me very sad, but it also left a message in my heart. And, I can truly say that he changed my thinking about Christology in the most lasting way. ...... Finally, I hope that all of us, as his friends and family, commemorate his life by carrying on the fight to preserve and protect the natural world and to denounce the damaging effects of bad science and technology on our beautiful planet.

Please accept my sincere condolences. Although Mr Hess lived a long life, his death is still a great loss. Unfortunately, I missed his funeral, but was there in spirit.

I really enjoyed the short time I spent visiting Hamilton when he was at Brookdale. I wish I had been able to know him longer. His smile could light up the room on a dark day. He and his loved ones have been in my thoughts and prayers,
