Travelers Rest

Hargrove Bowles III, age 74, of Travelers Rest, SC died on April 12th. Born and reared in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of the late Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles, Jr. and Jessamine Boyce Bowles Morris.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Olga Fields Bowles; his brother Erskine Boyce Bowles (Crandall Close) of Charlotte, NC; his sister Mary Holland Bowles (William J. Blanton) of Raleigh, NC, and pre-deceased by his sister Martha Thomas Bowles (Geoffrey Curme). Also surviving are his children: daughter, Kelly Bess (Clay Young) of Charlotte, NC; daughter Amy Lambert (Michael Propst) of Raleigh, NC, and son Hargrove "Bogie" Bowles, IV (Jennifer Wolfe) of Nashville, TN; grandchildren Hutch, Boyce and Bess Young; Patrick Propst, and Griffin Bowles, and multiple nieces and nephews and their children.

Hargrove attended Virginia Episcopal School (VES) in Lynchburg, VA and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the University of Georgia (1966) with a BBA degree, and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He later did post-graduate work in security analysis at Northwestern University.

He was a partner of J.C. Bradford and Company, now UBS, where he worked from 1968 until his retirement. He was a broker in the Greenville, SC office, served on the company's Senior Advisory Council, later managed the Spartanburg, SC office and worked from his home as he approached retirement.

He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserve (1963-1969).

Skipper was an avid, life-long hunter and fisherman who took great pleasure in traveling with friends to many destinations in pursuit of these sports. He also delighted in introducing numerous young boys to hunting and fishing. He was a member of Trout Unlimited, the South Carolina Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, and was a founding life-member of the South Carolina Waterfowl Association.

He was also an enthusiastic golfer who enjoyed the game in the company of many friends.

He was a volunteer with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, where he helped initiate The Max Heller Summer Youth Employment program, and led the Chamber's membership drive. In addition, he was a supporter of Christian Blind Mission International.

Skipper had a very special interest in the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he volunteered from 1974-2014. He was a member of the James E. West Society, the 1910 Society and the Executive Board of Directors. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor bestowed on a Boy Scouts volunteer on a local level. He strongly believed scouting was the best way for a boy to become a man, live and follow the Scout Oath and become a useful member of society.

Pallbearers will be: Al Colquitt of Atlanta, GA; Richard Hydinger of Birmingham, AL; James T. Fesmire of Greensboro, NC; Scott Barker, Tom Bates, Tom Bigby, Ronald Chastain, Al Hagood, Tracy Pellett and Bill Poe of Greenville, SC; Tom Siler of Knoxville, TN; Henry Bivens of Pickens, SC; and Harris Cottingham, Harold Harris, David McCauley, John Walker, Sr. and John Walker, Jr. of Travelers Rest, SC.

Olga, so sorry to just be seeing this today. How blessed I was to have spoken with Hargrove several times this year & shared some great memories of out teenage years. He shared with me how fortunate he was to have met you & shared his life with you. Thank you for being there for him. How beautiful it was that he said you were the best & he was so thankful to have found a rare love! I will always remember Hargrove with great fondness and so glad I was able to have met you all those years ago at the beach. Beautiful memories of you both.
