Harry Morsch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2025.
Harry J. Morsch, a long time resident of Nutley, NJ passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on March 18, 2025, at the age of 93.

Harry was a proud Marine, dedicated educator, and beloved family man and spent a large part of his life serving his country and community. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he carried his strong sense of integrity into everything he did.

Harry served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He took immense pride in his service, embodying the Marine Corps values of honor and commitment.

After his time in the Marines, Harry earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Newark State Teachers College (now Kean University). He spent his notable career in education in the Newark public school system, as a highly respected principal until his retirement in 1993. He was known for his steady leadership, particularly during a period of social change and teachers' strikes in the 1960s and 1970s. He mentored his colleagues and worked to ensure students had access to a fair and supportive learning environment.

Baseball was a lifelong passion for Harry. At St. Benedict's Prep, he was known as "one of the most feared batters" on the team. He was also a brilliant third baseman during his time at Teachers College. Later, he spent over 15 years coaching Little League Baseball in Nutley, passing down his love of the game. He was also quite the basketball player in his day.

Harry had a quick wit and a knack for wordplay, often jokingly telling his grandchildren they were "full of Pha-dinkydust." He cherished the family gatherings spent outdoors in view of his beautiful garden. His grandchildren fondly remember him teaching them about different plant life and the patience and care that gardening requires. He was a constant source of wisdom and support for his family, always rooting for their success.

Harry is survived by his loving wife Marilyn of 69 years. Together, they had four children: the late Richard Morsch and his wife Dawn, Karen Villano and her husband Robert, Thomas Morsch and his wife Robin, and Cindy Zederbaum and her husband Scott. All his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will always remember his leadership, humor, and parting reminder to "not work too hard."

A Memorial Mass will be held in his honor at a later date. Donations in his honor can be made to Alzheimer's Association. ALZ.ORG
