HARRY PATTERSON Obituary
58, bartender and past owner of the River City Inn, downtown, known as a humorist, trivia book author and lifelong lover of Pittsburgh sports, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17. Patterson, of O'Hara Township, was a bartender at the River City Inn since 1984 that included several years of ownership of the old school drinking establishment. Known as "The Bartender," and "Prince Harry" to his patrons, he was quick with a laugh and quicker with an answer to obscure sports trivia, political minutiae and obscure musical facts. Before he became known as one of the most noted mixers of libations in downtown's history at the RCI, he served as a barkeep in Oakland and Squirrel Hill. He graduated from Fox Chapel High School and the University of Pittsburgh. The affable Harry, was notorious for his ability to provide a quick and accurate retort to trivia questions on politics (especially politicians he didn't care for), and many other issues, but he was especially knowledgeable on Pittsburgh, its sports teams and his beloved music, where his interests ranged from The Beatles to Frank Sinatra. Harry was never a braggart, but he would casually mention during his long hours behind the bar that he was present when the Beatles stormed the Civic Arena In the early 1960s and was elated to enjoy the crooning of Frank Sinatra at several venues around the nation. In fact, he was present for hundreds of the best concerts ever to roll through his home town, which was only interrupted by 3 year stint in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably in Germany for 2 years. His wide-ranging knowledge of sports thrust Harry into the publishing world with his "Pittsburgh Sports Wiz Trivia Quiz," and several other books after another local writer (and bar patron) referred him to a publishing house in New Jersey. "I had all this mush in my head all these years and I find out it's actually a commodity. I didn't know I could cash in on it," Patterson said with his trademark laugh during an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about his writing career. He was writing a Rock and Roll trivia book at the time of his death. Beloved son of Julianne (Braun) Patterson and the late Harry Graham Patterson Sr.; brothers Frederick Patterson (Kim) and Jim Patterson (Shannon); sisters Mary Louise Brown (Bill), Julianne Dolan (Rick), Peggy Versaw (Bill), and 13 proud nieces and nephews who lovingly called him Uncle Punky. Because he was an avid reader, the family would like donations to go to The Shaler North Hills Library, 1822 Mt. Royal Boulevard, Glenshaw, PA 15116 In Memory of Harry G. Patterson, Jr. Memorial Mass will be held Sat., Jan. 29, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 330 Dorseyville Rd., O'Hara Twp. at 11:00 a.m.

My condolences to Harry's family. I worked with Harry at Dingbats in the mid 80's and I miss sitting at the bar after work talking about any number of things that Harry had knowledge of. We also attended a couple of concerts together with the crew at the restaurant. He was one of the kindest, most affable people I have ever met. Were there a picture accompanying the word bartender in the dictionary his should be there because he was the best at what he did. May he rest in peace and I'm sure he God are having a few laughs together.

My favorite line from a sympathy card has always been "We have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." I miss you so very much, it's been such a long time since we worked together at the RCI. You made working there a pleasurable experience and were always quick to put a smile on my face. Cousin, my blood and my friend.
