Helen KOSTIUK Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Apr. 22 to Apr. 24, 2017.
Helen Anna Kostiuk (Wasylyshyn)
August 29, 1932 – Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
April 20, 2017 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-baba. Helen passed away surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the age of 84 years. Mom is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by her children: Christina (Dan Muhlbach) Kostiuk, Larry (Shelly) Kostiuk, Sonya (Jeff) Weightman and Greg (Valerie Martell) Kostiuk; grandchildren: Jennifer (Marc) Herbert, Jessica (Travis) Fehr, Mallory (James) Zakrewski, Matt (Ashley) Kostiuk, Melissa Kostiuk, Nathan Kostiuk, Kyle (Andrea) Muhlbach, Cole (Amber) Muhlbach; James Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Cody Nelson, Elise Nelson, Jennifer (Travis) Brunner, Josh (Erin Barteski) Weightman, Cody (Amanda Butz) Weightman; great-grandchildren: William and Isabelle Herbert, Taylor and Samantha Fehr, Madison Zakrewski, Weston and Keaton Kostiuk, Max Lang, Hunter Muhlbach, Kayden and Rylan Brunner, Jordyn Coote. Helen is survived by her brother Buddy (Pat) Wasylyshyn, sisters Phyllis Wasylyshyn and Eleanor (Raymond) Cote, sister-in-law Marjorie Wasylyshyn, sister-in-law Evelyn Kostiuk and brother-in-law Father Walter Kostiuk along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Kostiuk, parents Katherine and Fred Wasylyshyn, infant brother William and brother Walter Wasylyshyn. Mom grew up on the family farm outside of Prince Albert and then moved to Saskatoon. She worked as a secretary in John Diefenbaker's law office, Office Manager at the King George Hotel, and salesclerk at Eaton's. Mom worked alongside Dad in the grocery stores they owned: Red Rose Grocery and King George Grocery. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her four children. She was a devoted mother who gave of herself to ensure that her children grew up to know the value of family and to achieve their potential. Mom was a homebody by nature, however when she travelled there was a whole new side to her. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling where they had many adventures from taking cruises to seeing the sights of Mexico and Cuba. She took great pride in her family's educational and personal achievements. She enjoyed watching them in everything from baseball and hockey games to Ukrainian dance concerts. Mom was a very good cook and an excellent baker, and she made sure that future generations will continue to enjoy her scuffles, holubsti (cabbage rolls) and pyrohy (perogies) by passing on the technique to those brave enough to learn. The doilies she made are a work of art as are the beaded Christmas ornaments. She enjoyed watching figure skating, the Blue Jays and Canada Junior Hockey and was a great "armchair" fan! Mom took great pride in the family home, keeping it in perfect, visitor-ready condition always. Relatives and friends are invited to Parastas (Prayers) at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Park Funeral Home, 311 – Third Avenue North, Saskatoon. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1202 11th Street East, Saskatoon, with Reverend Fr. Leonid Malkov, CSsR and Right Reverend Fr. Walter Kostiuk, celebrants. Following the luncheon, interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph's, 33 Valens Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 3S2 in support of their work in Ukraine or a charity of your choosing. Special thanks to the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph's, nurses and staff of St. Joseph's Home who took such great and compassionate care of Mom during her time there.
