Helen M. Long Masters, 95, of Fairmount Springs, died early Thursday morning, June 3, 2021, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Charles Sorber, in Fairmount Springs.
Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Muhlenberg, Luzerne County, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. Long and Olive Baer Long.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gerald L. Masters, Nov. 22, 2003.
Mrs. Masters was a "Rosie Riveter," assisting with the War effort during World War II, employed by the Crispin Multiplex, Berwick. She later worked a short time for Wise Potato Chip Company, Berwick. She also assisted her husband with the operation of the family farm and with Masters Bus Line for the Northwest Area School District. But for most of her life, she was well known as an accomplished musician and had played for various local dance bands for over 75 years. For the last 25 years, she was the leader of the Masters Band.
She was an active member of the Fairmount Springs United Methodist Church, where she served as the pianist and the choir director for the youth and adult choirs. She was also known for orchestrating the annual Christmas musicals for the Church for more than 50 years.
She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, where she had served as their organist for more than 40 years.
Surviving are her three daughters, Gail D. Sorber and her husband, Charles; Kay M. Yankovich and her husband, Paul; Jill W. Kliamovich and her husband, Steve, all of Benton. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Adam Sorber and his fiancée, Bobbi Sisock; Nathan Sorber and his wife, Erin; Ashley Lawson and her husband, Tony; Arithe Kline and her husband, Ben; Jonathan Yankovich; seven great-grandchildren, Ainsley Sorber; Ella Sorber; Abigail Lawson; Charles Kline; Manning Lawson; Noah Sorber; and Oliver Sorber; a brother, Ronald Long and his wife, Sara, Bloomingdale; as well as 16 nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Gerald, she was preceded in death by the following siblings, Arline Dennis; Dazelle Ridall; Belva Titus; Thelma Steinruck; William Long, Opal Featherman; and by two brothers who died in infancy, George and Robert Long.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (State Route 487).
Burial will be in Bloomingdale Cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McMichael Funeral Home Inc., in Benton. Order of Eastern Star services will also be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home.
