A year ago today, Henry (Hank) Goldstein, 83, of Tucson, AZ, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died from pancreatic cancer at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson. He was born to Mae Prager and Joseph Goldstein in New York City on August 16, 1939. He attended public schools in the Bronx until the age of thirteen when his family moved to Mount Vernon, New York. He graduated from A.B. Davis High School in 1957. In the fall of 1957 he entered New York University (University Heights) where he majored in chemistry and minored in history. As an undergraduate his summers were spent at various jobs including working at the Mount Vernon local newspaper and at the Credit Bureau of Greater New York. In 1961, he received the B.A. degree from NYU. In the fall of 1962, he entered the graduate school of Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, where he majored in organic chemistry and served as both a teaching and research assistant. The master's degree was received in 1963.

In February of 1965 he entered the graduated school of the University of Connecticut in Storrs where he majored in organic chemistry and minored in physical chemistry. He served as a teaching assistant in freshman chemistry, organic chemistry, and terminal courses in both organic and elementary chemistry. During the summer of 1965 he was employed by General Foods as a summer profressional trainee. In December of 1965 he was elected to Phi Lambda Upsilon, Honorary Chemical Society, and was active in this organization throughout his stay at the university. In May of 1969 he was elected to the newly formed chemistry department Graduate Council and In May of 1970 was initiated as an associate member into the Society of the Sigma XI, Devoted to the Promotion of Research in Science. The Ph.D. in organic chemistry was received in 1970.

He worked for Amstar Corporation (Domino Sugar) in Brooklyn, NY, as a Senior Research Chemist (1970-1972) and as a Group Leader (1972-1976). He then worked for Miller Brewing Company (now known as Molson Coors), Milwaukee, WI, from 1976-2002 where he eventually became Manager of Flavor, Foam Chemistry and Hop Development. He had many patents and received various awards for his work in addition to participating in conferences, and visiting universities and companies in Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland and Ireland.

Hank was a smart, witty, loving man, and a wonderful husband and father. He loved animals. He was a lifelong learner. After retiring to Tucson, AZ, he attended the University of Arizona Classics Department to study Ancient Greek. He was able to read and write in that language after only a couple of years of study. He could speak and write German and Yiddish, as well as some Spanish, French and Hebrew. He taught chemistry at Pima Community College for several years. He and his wife, Mary, loved to travel and to visit their families.

Hank is survived by his wife of 25 years, Mary Ogilvie-Goldstein, his child, Amy J. Shore (Scott), his daughter-in-law, Chantal Goldstein (widow of Eric), his granddaughters Celeste Goldstein Bishop (Kyle), Sierra Goldstein and Emma Shore; his brothers Michael Goldstein and Steven Goldstein (Lila), nephew Jonathan Goldstein (Stephanie) and niece, Andrea Katz (Jason). Hank was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Eric Goldstein, and his daughter, Meredith Goldstein.

A valued first cousin. A guy who consistently shared opinions in an honest and straight forward fashion. Always fun to be with, humor being a pillar of his outgoing personality. A smart guy, obviously highly educated but never one to flaunt his achievements. We grew up together. I often think of him.
