Nice to remember the doctor who brought me into this world in 1960. My memories of him will always be his peaceful demeanor and kind treatment of me, even when he had to give me shot!

I was just thinking of him this week. Remembering his office and the suckers he gave out. Funny to see this email.

the vashon island cabin
June 19, 2017
I had the pleasure of being associated with Dr. Carroll through Anne Marie, when she was Anne Marie Chambers. There was a vintage tricycle that he owned, that was once Anne Marie's and all of Dr.Carroll's grand children had ridden it so much that the tires were worn out.
He had indicated that he wanted to get new tires for it, but couldn't find anyone that would do it. I said allow me to deal with that. When I returned it to him, the grandchildren were able to ride it again.
I had the distinct pleasure of doing a pen and ink drawing of that tricycle and giving it to him for a fathers day present over at the vashon island cabin many years ago, just seeing the smile it brought to his face was a great reward.
He was one of the most interesting, and caring and loving people I have ever met.
He was truly unique in his skills as a doctor, and he was truly blessed to have such a wonderful family.
I was very saddened to learn of his passing.
My sympathies to the family.

Dr. Carroll was my younger sister and brothers doctor and was amazing. When my husband and I had our 2 boys there was no question who there doctor would be. We drove from Renton just to see him. Our boys had several health issues so we saw him frequently. Many a night he would get a phone call from us that one of the kids was sick with 105 temp. He always said I will meet you at my office. He could of had us go to West Seattle General however he never did. He always reassured us we were doing just the right things. Told me I could better care for my sick child then the hospital. Money was never a question. Whatever the insurance didn't pay he always told us it's okay just pay what you can when you can. The kids loved him. My husband and I thought he was the best doctor. The most kind and caring man. We still talk about all he did for us. What a great man.

Wow! Even though it's been over 55 years since I got my polio shot, I totally remember Dr. CARROLL from when I was a wee one! I still remember his face!! How amazing to read more of this good physician, and how He and his wife were blessed to see 72 years of marriage. I remember waiting on my Momma's lap to see Dr. CARROLL at his WS office, which somehow I'm remembering it was near the junction, maybe Alaska street? God Bless this man's legacy of doctoring and obviously who raised a family that honors that legacy.

Dr. Carroll Took care of me and my 4 siblings for as long as he would let us come to him! When my son was born in 1968, Dr. Carroll came to the hospital right after he left his office to check out my boy. I was exhausted, in pain and a little goofy on meds, but all was well when Dr. Carroll got there. He said he felt like a grandpa to my son, since he'd known me most of my life. He was the kindest, most reassuring presence I've ever known in a doctor. He was the absolute epitome of what a doctor should be, and I feel very lucky to have been his patient.
My most sincere condolences to Mrs. Carroll and the family. My family sends our thoughts and prayers to you all.

My husband and I both have fond memories of Dr Carroll's gentle manner when we were children. I wonder how many West Seattle tonsils he removed in addition to ours? Of course only Cindy got to have hers in a jar for awe-filled examination by her bluebird troop. Pretty cool perk of having a wonderful Doctor dad. May God comfort you as you grieve , Hazel, Ann Marie, Christy, Wendy, and Cindy. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you. --Debbie Fleetwood Wood

He saved our lives, Darla and Cheryl Didricksen, when our kidneys shut down in the early 1950's. I was around 3 Darla was 2. The JAMA recognized him because he solved the mystery of why 2 little girls kidneys would shut down at the same time.

Dr. Carroll was our beloved pediatrician for many years. He used to kid me saying that he could practice medicine full time just caring for our 9 children and one other family he served that had 12 children. He was a man of integrity and skill, devoted to his practice and his patients. My husband and I extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Carroll is undoubtedly receiving a warm welcome in heaven for his loving and generous life well lived. He was a dear friend of my father's. Fishing trips and lots of other happy gatherings including standing up with my Dad at my parent's wedding.
When my dad passed away in 1958 he provided care to us three kids free of charge knowing that my widowed mother could not afford much. I remember his loving kindness, caring house calls and the fun waiting room in his West Seattle practice. No other doctor has been able to match his loving care and concern I felt. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I loved Dr. Carroll. When I was eleven, and had just experienced the Alaska Earthquake and the death of my father, we moved to West Seattle. From my first visit, I fell in love with his warm compassionate nature. I wanted him to be my new father. If memory serves me, I think he also asked my mom if she would like him to take me off her hands and raise me. As much as I loved my mom, I thought it was a grand idea. Mom didn't! I continued to go to Dr. Carroll until one visit when I was 21 years old and they told me I was now too old and had to find a new doctor. I cried! I kept in touch, and Dr. Carroll and his wife came to my wedding. If I hadn't had a step father at the time to walk me down the aisle, I would have wanted Herbert to. A few years ago, I stopped by his house and he gave me two duck decoys. I have always cherished them and will for the rest of my life. I last saw him when it was a Father's Day and I dropped of some banana bread and a card. I sure wish I could do that one more time. You will always be in my heart.....thank you for being a part of my life.

Dr. Carroll was my pediatrician until I was eighteen years old. And then took care of my children. I was always so confident in the advice he gave me, and I even called when we moved, to California for my husbands job, and I had two young children. He was always so kind, but also forthright. As a teenager I was so proud when I had his children in swimming lessons at the Y, and he would thank me! My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Carroll and the rest of his family.

I will always cherish the time when Dr. Carroll and Christy took me to Lake Washington to teach me how to waterski After swallowing half of the water in the lake, Dr. Carroll said, "One more time and you're there." He was right! Thanks for believing in me! My sincere condolences to all of you.

Herb was like a second dad to me. Together with my dad, his best friend, they shepherded seven daughters through girlhood, adolescence and adulthood. Neither man ever suggested in any way that we couldn't do or be anything we wanted to be, an incredible gift for girls growing up in the sixties.
I will always be grateful for Herbie's calm, pragmatic, patient manner, whether teaching me to waterski in the cold waters off Vashon Island, or talking me through a febrile seizure when my oldest child was nine months old. It was hard to believe anything was a crisis with Herbie, which I know was one of his greatest gifts to the hundreds of parents whose children he treated over the years.
He was a quiet, compassionate, generous, and loving man, whose wry wit could easily be missed. He neither asked for, nor expected thanks for his many unheralded acts of kindness and generosity for family, friends and patients.
Just shy of his 96th birthday, his curiosity and intellect remained as sharp as ever and he lovingly served as the respected patriarch of his large extended family.
He will be deeply missed.

I am so sorry to hear this. Dr. Carroll was my pediatrician from 1961 through 1979, and he was a great doctor. He used to say, after he'd heard my description of what was wrong, "Well, I'm afraid you're going to live." We still say that in my family, and we enjoy a laugh.

Dr. Carroll was my pediatrician and also my daughter's (wouldn't trust her to anyone else). He saw me through the childhood illnesses (the worst case of mumps he'd ever seen he told me once)and coping with cold sores. He often said that he wouldn't treat me when I got taller than he was! What a wonderful man.

When they say "beloved," it truly does no justice to the word. Easily the kindest, gentlest man I have ever known. He delivered me, my brother and sister back in the days when there were no guarantees and child birth was not something to be taken for granted. You will be well and truly missed, Dr. Carroll.

Dr. Carroll was my pediatrician, as well. I will always remember the care and concern he showed me and will remember him fondly. On a funny note - I have Dr. C to blame for the constant comments I get when I visit the dentist! Apparently I have the largest set of tonsils they've ever seen! Most of my classmates growing up went under the knife at the first sign of infection. Dr Carroll would just look at my tonsils after every illness and say, "not yet." So I'm fifty and they are still going strong!

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Dr. Carroll was a great man and a compassionate, caring doctor. He took care of my health as a child and even snuck me in the back door for a mumps shot as an adult so I wouldn't be embarrassed and have to sit in the "little" chairs in the waiting room. Thank you Dr. Carroll for making doctors visits less traumatizing. Rest in peace.
