I knew Herb as a longtime member of the Tennessee Trails Association.
We hiked the John Muir Trail (211 miles from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney), and the High Sierra Trail (72 miles across the Sierra Nevada range to Mt. Whitney) together. He had also hiked the Appalachian Trail as well as a rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon. Closer to home, for TTA, Herb was known as the organizer of the popular Leprechaun Leap and Slackpacker Weekend outings for multiple years.

Grew up with Herb on Wayland Dr., ran with him and Robbin Barksdale many an hr. doing what little kids did and then hung some during High School. Always a great guy with the best deep tan, I'm sure he will be missed.

I´m very sorry to hear of Herb´s passing. He took me under his wing. His motto on the trail was "Hike Lite" and it became mine as well. I will fondly remember my time with him.

I will certainly miss Herb. We joined Covenant in 2008 and he was one of the first member of the Diaconate to introduce himself to us. His caring and relaxing personality made an impact on my late wife and I. He communicated so well and I always felt he cared about what people said when in discussions with him. Even after suffering health setbacks it was always an inspiration to see Herb and Judy in church. He was a man of faith and an example to so many others. My sincere condolences to Judy and the family on your loss.

Herb was such a nice person to be around. He was always interested in what you said or were doing, and asking if you needed anything to make your life easier. Though I and my wife, Carol, a second cousin, were only able to visit infrequently, we looked forward to seeing Herb and Judy. They always treated you as a long-lost family member. He loved the outdoors and I enjoyed talking with him about it. I am so sorry he could not complete a through-hike of the Appalachian Trai for which he trained and did walk short segments. I will remember him fondly, as I did his father of whom he so reminded me. Rest in peace Herb, and know you will be missed. Sincerely, Robert Burr
