Howard Snider Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2017.
Dr. Howard L. Snider Sr. left this world to be with his Lord, Monday, April 3, 2017, at their home in DeQuincy, La. He was born March 14, 1925, in Longville, La. He lived his life to the fullest-enjoying many friends and activities. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps just out of High School during World War II. He witnessed the now historic raising of the flags at Iwo Jima. On returning from the war, he attained a degree in Mortuary Science and helped his Dad with the Snider Funeral Home. A few years later, he attended Loyola Dental School and graduated in 1955 and practiced dentistry in DeQuincy for over 30 years. He also served as Associate Clinical Professor at LSU Dental School in New Orleans, teaching 4th year dental students. He was proud to have received the honors of Distinguished Person of the Year 2007, Vernon Parish Outstanding Louisiana Tree Farmer in 2008, and Citizen of the Year in 2015. He was a long time active member of the United Methodist Church of DeQuincy, and served in many capacities including finance committees, Sunday school, building committees and United Methodist conferences. He was an avid sportsman and actively pursued his hobbies of fishing and hunting and preserving our natural resources. He was a tree farmer and active in forestry issues and legislation.

Howard is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ruby Brown Snider; daughter, Marcia Snider Hammock (David/deceased) of DeQuincy; sons, Dr. Lee Snider (Angie) of Lake Charles, Dr. Van Snider (Dr. Lisa) of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Amy Hammock and Tyler Hammock, Caitlin Snider and Austin Snider, Lauren Snider and Melissa Snider; and great-grandchildren, Carter Snider and Avery Claire Snider.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Earl and Ruth Snider; brothers, Earl Snider, Kenneth Snider; along with sister, Eleanor Snider Witherington.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017, at First Baptist Church of DeQuincy. Officiating will be the Rev. Gil Arthur, the Rev. Chris Wilbur, the Rev. T.D. Cardwell, along with the Rev. Carlie Jackson. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 6, 2017, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at Hixson Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy. Visitation will resume on Friday at First Baptist Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Perkins Cemetery.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Richard Gilmore for his endless support and care for our father. There were many others that helped in his care including Dr. Mike Cormier, nurse practitioners and countless Nurses and Techs. If in our haste we have forgotten someone, please know that we are forever grateful for your kindness.

In lieu of flowers, our Dad would be honored if you considered a donation to the DeQuincy Veterans Memorial Fund, which is P.O. Box 398, DeQuincy, LA 70633, or you may use the GoFundMe account which has been setup.

Dr. Snider has always been a big part of our lives. It made me so sad to read of his passing. He and his family have contributed so much to our little town of DeQuincy. My heart goes out to Ruby, Marsha, who was a flower girl in our wedding, Lee, who always drank coffee with my mother when he would accompany Ruby to the beauty shop, and to Van. May God give you comfort and peace in the days ahead. Dr. Snider will certainly be missed.
My love to you all,

I will miss Howard, my Godfather, for many reasons. As I was growing up, Howard and Ruby were truly my second set of parents. Howard and my dad were close friends - so close, Dad asked Howard and Ruby to be my Godparents.
Many vacations together with my family in DeQuincy and at the Snider's Toledo Bend fishing camp - spending time together - often with a fishing rod in our hands. Howard's oldest son, Lee Snider and I were like close cousins as we were growing up. We spent many an hour fishing, spear fishing or hunting frogs at Toledo Bend. Lee was in our wedding.
The Snider's and I have lost touch over the years but I will always remember the always kind, gentle, caring and energetic Howard Snider, my beloved Godfather.
God bless him and keep him as he waits for us to join him and my late father, Tom Peyton - whom we have been without for over thirty years. "Not just yet Howard, Lord willing...not just yet."

Dear Snider Family, While I have very fond memories of Dr. Snider (and the whole gang of Sniders!) his friendship with my father, Leo Fitzenreiter, was such a blessing to us all. Dad's stories - and therefore, precious memories, of Dr. Snider are remembered fondly and told frequently. What an amazing treasure, to have someone so full of life, so dedicated to family and friends, to have been fortunate enough to be a part of his world. We send you prayers of peace. Laura (Fitzenreiter) and Anthony LeDoux
