Hugo Rossini Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 8, 2011.
ROSSINI (Rossoni), Hugo Orator, naturalist, humourist, vintner, part actor, part serious student of life: all of these descriptions and more do not capture the essence of the man. It is with deep sadness and wonderful memories that we announce the peaceful and dignified passing of Hugo Rossini on June 6th at Riverview Gardens in his 91st year. Born in Codroipo, Italy, he was the husband and one true love of the late Tomassina (Savoni) for 65 1/2 years. Loving father of Lisa Alward (Roy), Chatham and Anne Marie Wilder (John) of Alymer. Doting Nonno to Matthew LeClair (Kim), Jenna LeClair, Josh Alward (Cheryl) and Jay Alward (Mary Ellen). Devoted great grandfather to Amanda, Jessica, Becky, Nicole, Courtney, Dylan, Jakob and Olivia. Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, friend to many. Brother of Hazel Pasquali (late Mirno), late Dr. Louis and Marjorie Rossoni, Carlo and Margaret (late Margaret) Rossoni, Bill and Jean Rossini. Brother-in-law to Audre Rossini (Late Angelo), Susan Savoni (Late Augustino), Nella Savoni (late Louie). Predeceased by brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Teresa Horvath. He owned and operated along with brother Carlo, "Rossini's Hot Rod Shop" in the 50's and later purchased and operated a Chrysler-Dodge dealership. He also helped in the kitchen of Rossinis Spaghetti House along with mom and the entire Rossini family at its inception in the early 50's. Dad was past President of the Chatham Rotary #6380 and Ambassador to the Governor for 20 years. He was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Benefactor. Rotary forged so many of his dear friendships. Some of his most cherished times were travelling globally with Mom and Rotary friends. Mom and Dad built a home in Blenheim in '91 and had a beautiful and simple life together. They took pleasure in working hard and tenderly managed the vineyard, orchard, pets, garden and the family winery. (Il Refugio) They gave of themselves and left the earth a better place than they found it. Dad loved people, believed in the power of kindness, and was always looking forward to the next gathering of family and friends. How we'll miss his sharp wit, sparkling sense of humour and oh - those dinner table discussions! How many parties did he hold in the palm of his hand as he regaled his guests with his latest repertoire. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of service to his family, friends and community. Following his beloved Tomassina's death, his life was less robust. He is probably reunited with Mom right now grinning that his friends and family will be getting together to honor him. To all who knew Dad, youll remember that he always recited a farewell poem as he departed any gathering. And so...Good-bye dear Dad. Here's to you "the bride may kiss the groom good-bye..." Friends and relatives may visit at the Funeral Home, 156 William St. S. Chatham on Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church (Visiting at the Church from 9 am till the time of the mass). Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. If you wish to make a donation, please consider the Chatham-Kent Humane Society or the Chatham-Kent Rotary Shelter Box Program. I met Hugo Rossini for the first time in 1999. I had driven down from Cambridge to interview Hugo and his brother Carlo for a story I wrote in Old Autos regarding their years operating Rossini's Hot Rod Shop in the 1950's. I was struck by Hugo's warmth and humour, as well as his sharp memory for detail. All during my interview, he kept asking me who would remember or care about something that happened so long ago. I reassured him that the hot rod shop was a vital and very important part of our past, and that many people do remember the shop and the part it played in that history. The highlight of the interview time I spent with the brothers was actually driving the famoous Rossini roadster through the streets of Chatham with Hugo beside me in the passenger seat. What an honour. It was a pleasure to have met Hugo Rossini, a true pioneer in Ontario's hot rod history!
