Ian Bickle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2008.
BICKLE-Ian Bickle passed away peacefully of complications from Alzheimer's with family by his side on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Regina Pioneer Village, his home for the past year. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank & Anna Bickle. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Diane; his three daughters, Margot Almas, Jean Diener (Rudi) and Donna Gartshore; his six beloved grandchildren, Lindsay, Laura, Anika, Mikaela, Markus and Sara; his brother, Warner and other extended family. Born March 31, 1931 in The Pas, Manitoba, Ian went to university at Western in London, Ontario, then moved to Saskatoon in the mid 1950's to begin a career in TV with CFQC. In 1961, he joined Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in Regina, where he served as Director of Communications for many years. A writer and editor at heart, Ian wrote many magazine and newspaper articles, earned numerous awards and had two books published. He also enjoyed a little golf, curling, reading, listening to music and watching sports. Throughout his life, Ian's greatest passion was his family, and his happiest hours were spent with Diane, his girls and his grandchildren, whether it be reading stories, feeding the geese in Wascana Park, sharing Sunday dinner, car rides, or the annual family holiday in Waskesiu. A Celebration of Ian's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 3510 Queen St, with Pastor Craig Moeller officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ian may be made to Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, # 301 2550 12th Ave., Regina, SK, S4P 3X1 or to Regina Pioneer Village, 430 Pioneer Dr., Regina SK, S4T 6L8. Dear Diane and family: Ian was one of my favouite people at Sask Wheat Pool. I worked there as the Occupational Health Nurse from 1977 to 1997 when I retired. I will always remember Ian as a kind and caring man who treated everyone with respect. My parents also were friends of Ian's mother who lived in the Pas when my father was stationed there with the provincial government. I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Marilyn Reddy

I remember Ian well from TV. Diane, I hope I am correct in remembering that Beth Fredeen was your sister. She and I became good friends during her short life at Eatonia. We both loved gardening and there is a tree planted in her memory at the church here. My husband also suffered from Alzheimer's disease the last years of his life. Sincere sympathy to you and your family.

Ian Bickle was one of my greatest mentors and helped pave the way for me entering the field of Public Relations and Broadcast Journalism. He was there for me when I needed letters of reference and I know that he had a major role in convincing Lorne Harasen to hire me as his assistant right out of college. It was his guidance that prompted me to act as a mentor to young people. I'm sure that I'm not the only one Ian has helped and who mourns him now. Ian gave selflessly - his time, energy, and immense talent.
