Ian Pirie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2021.
Ian Pirie, 79, passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda, and twin sons, Neil and Christopher. Since his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer last summer, Ian has shown up with courage, dignity, and purpose. We honor him for all he has provided our family and for the gift of time to say goodbye. Ian and Linda immigrated to Hamilton from Dundee, Scotland in 1966 and through hard work and respect for each other built a new life from scratch. Ian embraced Hamilton and his chosen country - he played soccer, made countless friends, built a career in manufacturing and devoted all of his spirit and boundless love to Linda and the boys. After a long career at Case (International Harvester) as a tool and die engineer, Ian enjoyed his retirement - chasing the grandkids, golfing and working at Willow Valley Golf Course, and finding endless projects around the house - he grabbed every minute of it. Throughout, Ian was committed to giving back and serving his community. Very Worshipful Brother Ian Pirie was a beloved PastMaster of Composite Lodge no.167 (GRC) and PastMaster of the Lodge of Strict Observance no.27 (GRC) as well 32nd Degree Mason in the York Rite and Scottish Rite. Ian is lovingly carried forward in his grandchildren Avery, Julia, and Violet Pirie and is survived by Sarah Fairfield (beloved mother of his grandchildren; Ancaster) and Michael Read (son-in-law; Manhattan, NY) as well as his relatives in Dundee, Scotland who include Gina Campbell (sister), Alison Campbell (niece), Joshua Britton (great nephew), and Brian Duguid ("brother"-in-law). Ian will be deeply missed by his wonderful neighbors (Kelly, Bob & Heidi), friends too numerous to list here, and his extended family in Canada and Scotland. A special thank you to Erlene (VON), Dorothy (and team at Juravinski Cancer Center), the Cancer Support Center, and Shoppers pharmacy team at Rymal/James for their dedication to Ian and for answering all our questions and keeping spirits high. A cremation has taken place and a memorial will be arranged at a more appropriate time. For now, stay safe and take care of one another. Love, the Pirie's.

Dear Linda & Family:

Please accept my sincere heartfelt condolences to you, your families, and friends of Ian. He was a great friend and Brother Mason, I was shocked and saddened to learn of his passing and sorry that I didn't get the opportunity to say goodbye! Whenever I met Ian we would always laugh because I would mispronounce his surname as they did when he joined the Scottish Rite. He had a dry wit, was proud of his Scottish heritage and may have said, ’if not for Scotland, there would be no Nessie.’ May the many good memories of the different facets of Ian give you comfort and strength as time passes! Ian has gone to the Grand Lodge above his Mansion ready.
So Mote it be.

Friend/Brother

An honest man here lies at rest,
As e’er God with His image blest:
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d,
Few heads with knowledge so inform’d:
If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.

We met Ian and Linda once in Kitchener when they visited there and later In Hamilton, their home, when we went to visit his sister Gina , Ron, Alison and Kyle Campbell. The Campbells were on holiday from Dundee. We knew Ron and Gina in Dundee.
Ian and Linda took us to Mother's Pizza. The twins were excited. We met Linda and Ian once more. We found the Piries' gentle friendly people and both of them had this huge smile that made one comfortable and welcome.
Our condolences go out to Linda, Neil, Chris and his sister Gina, Alison and Josh in Dundee Scotland.

A wonderful man and Mason. I first met Ian many, many years ago when we were still young and dark haired. I was a soccer referee and refereed Ian many times. Great player and a gentleman on and off the field. Later we met again through Free Masonry. When I was in the midst of cancer treatment Ian was very solicitous and caring when we met at meetings. You will be missed VW Brother.

What a wonderful man Ian was. Our friendship has been for almost sixty years here in Dundee Scotland and in Canada. He was like a father to my daughter Karen when she went to Canada 36 years ago and still kept a fatherly eye on her. We will miss him at family gatherings. Tom and Helen Moran Dundee Scotland

Linda, we wish you and your family our greatest condolences for the loss of such a wonderful man. Ian will forever be imprinted in my mind, his voice a strong and steady guide on what it means to be a good man. I know this sentiment resounds with many others, and we have all been fortunate to have had our lives touched by his grace and kindness. Ian always brought a smile to others and enjoyed his good spirit with others. I first met Ian while working at Case IH(my father was a foremen and is it alive at 91.) Then we got to know each other better as Masons which I know he was a proud member. As I also remember sharing my family ties of Scotland as my grandfather was from Glasgow plus the Rangers. Another good man to brighten up Heaven So Mote it Be
