Ignatz Deutsch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2017.
Ignatz Deutsch, devoted brother, father, grandfather, husband, business leader and philanthropist, died peacefully after a brief illness in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Feb. 4, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.

Ignatz Deutsch was born on Jan. 31, 1921, in Velky Berezny, Ukraine, to Yehuda and Sarah Deutsch of blessed memory.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Deutsch (Eilat), of Tel Aviv, Israel; son, Jacques Deutsch, of Charleston, S.C.; sister, Chemda "Zisu" Lieberman, of Ramat Gan, Israel; grandchildren, Ronnie and Dan, of Tel Aviv, Israel; Jonathan (Molly Aherne Deutsch), of Narberth, Pa.; and Justin Deutsch, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and great-granddaughters, Emma and Alice; as well as Victoria's children, Aryeh (Natalie) of Dallas, Texas; and Julia Eilat, of Tel Aviv; and Victoria's grandchildren, Ron, Yonatan and Bar.

He is predeceased by his son, Henri Deutsch (Marilyn Weisberg Deutsch), of Glenburn Twp., Pa.; brother, Hershi, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brother, Morris, of Bronx, N.Y.; and eight other siblings who perished in the Holocaust.

Ignatz Deutsch himself was a survivor of Theresienstadt concentration camp. Following the war, he came to the United States in 1950, with his wife (the late Sarah "Simi" Ackerman Deutsch) and sons, where he worked as a necktie presser and as a cook in a nursing home in Queens, N.Y. In 1956, he moved to Scranton for an opportunity to purchase the Scranton Convalescent Home. In 1964, he purchased the former Elks Club at 406 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, founding Keystone Training and Rehabilitation Residence, which became Keystone Community Resources, serving people with intellectual disabilities. In 1983, he opened Keystone Community Living in South Plainfield, N.J. He was a pioneer in integrating people with disabilities in the broader community and received national recognition for his initiatives in this area.

When living in Scranton, he was active in many religious, civic and professional organizations, including synagogues and the Freemasons. He retired to Israel and dedicated his retirement to family, cooking large family dinners, study and philanthropy.

A funeral and interment was held in Rechovot, Israel, on Sunday, Feb. 5. A memorial in Scranton, to celebrate Ignatz's life, will be held on Sunday, April 30, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, carry on Ignatz's generosity by donating to a charity supporting Jewish causes or people with disabilities.

I worked for Keystone very early in my career. As I returned from my honeymoon Mr. Deutsch overheard some co workers congratulating me. Before the end of my shift an envelope with a generous gift was awaiting me in the office. He was a kind and gentle. I am forever grateful for this memory. condolences on the passing of a wonderful philanthropist.

My mother Claire Fox who recently passed on December 25th was Mr. Deutsch's secretary for 25 years at Keystone City Residence. She respected, admired and loved Mr. D and spoke of his generosity, dedication and love not only for his family but, his second family Keystone. My memory of him for the respect he showed my Mother, his staff and his children at Keystone and the accomplishments he made throughout his life will be a memory I WILL NEVER FORGET. May he rest in peace and, may his family be filled with PEACE in their hearts.

Condolences to the family, and particularly to my long ago friend Jacques. Even with a full life, it's difficult and sad to lose a parent.
