Irma JAFFE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 30, 2003.
JAFFE, Irma (Immy) On May 27, 2003 passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Bernard Jaffe for 56 years. Devoted mother of Nicole David and Brian Braff of Los Angeles, Conny Jaffe-Barry and the late Dr. William F. Barry of Ottawa, and Dr. Peter Jaffe and Dr. Deborah Reitzel-Jaffe of London, Ontario. Loving grandmother of Adam, Benjamin, Aaron, Daniel and Michael. Also predeceased by her parents and a sister, Margot Manasse. Survived by her niece, Janie Manasse. Immy's favorite song was "People," and she would often recite the line "People who love people are the luckiest people in the world." She loved people, lived life to the fullest and was the consummate life-long learner. Amongst her many accomplishments was earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University at age 76. She had a talent for languages and spoke German, English, French and Italian fluently. Immy was born in Berlin in 1912, the eldest of two daughters. Together with her husband Bernard, she immigrated to Montreal to escape Nazi Germany. They were amongst the last Jewish refugees to make it to Canada before the outbreak of WWII. They raised their three children with constant reminders about the privilege of being Canadian, and being born into relatively peaceful times. Immy cherished her many friendships whom she considered family and became an intimate part of her daily life. Her family and friends will carry her joyful spirit and determination with them forever. Funeral services from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon West, at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2003. Reception to follow. Internment will be private. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to Auberge Shalom - the women's shelter where Immy volunteered - would be appreciated (P.O. Box 986, Montreal, Quebec H3X 3Y1). The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Blair Whittemore and his staff at the Montreal General Hospital, and to Nora, Charito, Arlin and Eden for their warmth and compassionate care during Immy's final months. We appreciate the support of Natalie and her team at the CSLC. A beautiful, inspirational and passionate woman has moved on and will be greatly missed.
