Jack Pechter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2024.
Jack Pechter - Holocaust survivor, real estate developer, and philanthropist - dies at 90.

Jack H. Pechter died of natural causes on August 24th, 2024, surrounded by family at home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was the son of Max and Sara (Bittner) Pechter of Rejowiec, Poland.

In 1939, five-year-old Jack Pechter, his parents and his three sisters, Jean, Helen, and Dora, were living in eastern Poland when the Nazis invaded the country. With Max's foresight and Sara's courage, the six Pechters began a five-year journey through eastern Europe and Russia to evade the Nazis. They reached the Russian border on horse and buggy, then onto cattle cars with other refugees exposed to the bitter cold, starvation, and gnawing uncertainty. Max had an unshakeable conviction that a bright future was available to them if he just persevered through displaced persons camps across Central Asia and Siberia before reaching the American shore of Baltimore in 1949. Through their harrowing journey, Sara kept the family strengthened with her consoling message throughout the war: "Tomorrow will be better. Tomorrow will be better."

When Jack and his family arrived in Baltimore, teen-aged Jack quickly embraced the opportunities he found. He attended the University of Maryland, served two years in the army, and soon met and married his wife Marilyn, with whom he would have four children. With Marilyn by his side, Jack dove into real estate, first as a laborer, then a broker, quickly scraping a few dollars from friends and family to become an investor and developer. As a businessman, Jack was known for his integrity, vision, and commitment to building strong communities. From the onset of his business success, he felt inspired by his parents and his journey to help the less fortunate.

Jack's mother would praise him only for his philanthropic activities, often telling him "doing for others" was the secret for happiness. In this spirit, Jack co-founded the International Institute for Holocaust Research, and served on boards of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Boca Raton Community Foundation, and Midtown Churches of Baltimore, Maryland, among several others. Jack received numerous awards from organizations including from the Jewish National Fund, Associated Jewish Charities of Baltimore, and Florence Fuller Child Development Center. Jack devoted himself to philanthropy, and instilled the value of "doing for others" in their children and grandchildren.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marilyn; their four children: Martin Pechter (Lisa Vanderwoude); Jeffrey Pechter; Shelly Himmelrich (Billy Himmelrich); Melissa Pechter; sister Dora Schwartz (Pechter); grandchildren, Danielle Wayne (Ethan Wayne), Nicole Pechter (Keith Epstein), Zachary Pechter (Alexa Reubens), Max Himmelrich, Charlie Himmelrich (predeceased), Jada Pechter; great-grandchildren, Eli, Maverick, and Rae; and countless friends and admirers.

The funeral will be held at B'Nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton, FL, on Monday, August 26, at 1pm, followed by the cemetery at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens in Boynton Beach, FL, at 3pm. The service will be streamed virtually on the following website: https://venue.streamspot.com/event/NDk5OTkxMg. The Shiva will be closed to the immediate family. It's been almost half a century, but I remember fondly my visits to Uncle Jack, Aunt Marilyn, and your house. (It wasn't till late in my childhood that I realized we weren't related, but that's what my parents had us call your parents - it was that kind of a relationship.) My sister Melanie, my parents, Lenny and Betsy Waldman, and I would visit your house in Pikesville. Except for the loud chiahuahua, we had a great time there, playing games and running around.

My last memory of your father is from at least 35 years ago, when my father and I ran into him and your grandfather at Attmans Deli in Pomona. Your grandfather took one look at me and asked my father, "Does he have a girlfriend?" My father thought quickly and answered back, "Sure, he has a million of them!" Even though that wasn't quite the case, it did get me out of a spot, as I wasn't ready for a match at the time.

May the Consoler console all of you, among other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I once met Jack at an event at Bnai Torah. It was a brief encounter, but I will never forget him. He was so kind and made me feel very welcome. As a development professional in the Boca community, I was aware of his philanthropy. Now that I've read his obit and his journey as a survivor of the Holocaust, I wish I would have had more time to get to know him. But what a great legacy he left behind. He did so much for others and his family can find comfort knowing what a huge impact he made. People like this are rare and we will all miss him in our community.

I first met Jack on probably the very first week I clerked with my mentor, who then became my partner, Dave Carney, who was one of the Pechter family's attorneys. Despite my being VERY green, Jack sincerely wanted to know my "take" on some of the issues surrounding his real estate matters. His perspective gained from his harrowing childhood always gave him a presence to "just move ahead" no matter how difficult the business environment. All the business issues aside, I learned so much about life from Jack over our over 45 year friendship. He was (and will always be) an unforgettable model to me of a very well-lived life.

About 40 years ago, I went to meet Jack, for the first time. One of his tenants, at his shopping center, had thrown some old mattresses over a fence onto our property. It was a meeting, I´ll never forget. We talked for over an hour. Only a moment about mattresses, but mostly about our lives and hopes and dreams.
Out of that meeting, came a partnership, not only about business, but a vision of something we could create together. He offered me an incredible opportunity that changed my life and that of my family.
Our thoughts and prayers today, are with his family and friends.

We had just finished playing golf in Atlanta and Jack and I were enjoying a cocktail. (OK, I was having a cocktail!) When Jack asked me to join him the following month at Baltimore´s Camden yards when Cal Ripken would be breaking the consecutive game record of Lou Gehrig (Jack knew that I love baseball as much as golf) I told him that I would feel selfish by taking away a seat that, perhaps, Marty would enjoy. He asked me again a few moments later and I said that, most likely, Jeffrey would enjoy the game and should probably go with him. He thought a while and then asked me to consider what happened to Julius Caesar when the Roman Emperor refused a third time. It was a great game!

Jack was kind and loving to me as he was with every person I saw him come in contact with. He loved his family immensely, from Marilyn all the way through to his grandchildren. I´m happy he got to enjoy his life in such a way that allowed him to do wonderfully kind deeds for people because that was the sinew of Jack Pechter. He was a blueprint of how life should be lived.

My family offers our deepest condolences.
