James William Coyne

James William Coyne peacefully passed away on January 7, 2023.

Born in the anthracite coal region borough of Ashland, PA, on May 7, 1949, to Mary Rita and James Coyne, Jim was the oldest of 5 children. He would often regale his children and grandchildren with stories of his youth: being coached by his father who founded the local Little League, sustaining multiple broken bones as he and his brothers played sports in the streets of Ashland, and sharing anecdotes of his 12 years attending Catholic school.

After enrolling at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Jim enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA, and later in Germany. After his discharge, Jim reconnected with and married Kathleen Gassaway who had been a classmate at Immaculate Heart Academy. After their marriage, Kathy and Jim moved to Northern Virginia to put down roots and start a family.

Professionally, Jim spent 40 years in banking where he retired as the EVP and COO of a local bank and then founded his own financial services company. Following his second retirement, Jim focused on his passions - photography, baseball, and doting on his grandchildren.

As a parent and grandparent, Jim was a devoted and proud fan who attended hundreds of baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse games, swim meets, and track and cross-country events. He was happiest when sharing pictures of his grandchildren.

Jim will be deeply missed by his wife of 49 years, Kathleen; his three children, Christopher, Michelle and Ryan; his daughter-in-law, Heather; his grandchildren, Caitlyn, Eamonn and Reilly; and his siblings, Nora Coyne Cordero, William Coyne, and Michael Coyne; his brother, Tom, preceded Jim in death.
