James Malachi "Jim" Flanagan, 78, of Manhattan and Eldred, NY passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025 in
Manhattan, NY surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of almost 40 years to Joan Langford-Flanagan.
Jim was the proud son of Eugene and Ruth Flanagan. He was born in Washington Heights and grew up in Massapequa, NY. He enjoyed fast cars, nights at the drive-in and "90 miles an hour" music with his friends. He graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1964. He was a celebrated track star and he scored the first goal ever for the Boys Varsity Soccer team. He attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, but soon enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant during the Vietnam Era as an Auto Pilot Tech in the 509th AMS, where he worked on B-52s for the SAC.
After returning home from the service, Jim worked for NY Telephone Company, AT&T, and various "Ma Bell" communication companies as a Systems Engineer. While working and raising a family, Jim earned his business degree from Hofstra University.
As a true New Yorker, Jim will be remembered for his quick wit, sarcasm and ability to tell a joke on the fly. He knew how to enjoy the good life, splitting his time between Eldred, Manhattan, Arizona and trips to Cancun. On the weekends you could find Jim meeting his friends for a cold drink and good conversation about the Yankees or old cars. He assembled an extensive collection of Hess trucks. In his free time, Jim would tinker around in his garage fixing or building things for his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to "the oldies" on his back deck.
Jim truly integrated himself into his communities. Most notably in Eldred, NY, where he resided for over 40 years. He was a member and officer of the VFW Post 6427 where he played bocce, helped fundraise and enjoyed the company of other Veterans. He also enjoyed participating in the St. Patrick's Day and Von Steuben Day parades where he was honored to walk as the Grand Marshall in both. He was also a member of the American Legion in Fountain Hills, AZ, where his name is proudly engraved on their wall.
Jim liked things done quickly, in his words: "It must be done like lightning"
Jim's legacy will live on through his four children and their spouses: Jimmy and Tricia Flanagan; Dawn and Dustin Macchi; Teresa and Kris Lindholm; Amy and Declan Gaffney and his 8 grandchildren: Sarah & Jimmy; Victoria & Nicolette; Elizabeth & Kristian; Sean & Finley, who lovingly called him Grand "Pop".
He is survived by his wife Joan; his brother Tommy & Joyce Flanagan; the mother of his children, Patricia Flanagan; and his nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held for Jim on Friday, March 28 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Redden's Funeral Home, 325 W 14th St, New York, NY.
A Mass will be held at St. Anthony's Church in Yulan, NY at 11am on May 10th.
A burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Eldred, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tusten-Highland-Lumberland VFW Post #6427, 58 Old Minisink Ford Rd, Barryville, NY 12719.
