I had the good fortune to both work with Jim at Mobil in the 1970s and to go on a few walks in the hills, though we lost touch with one another some years back. I have often quoted Jim, and still do, on the Mount Allan traverse many many years ago when he observed that there are few people in the city who look as at peace as they do on a mountain top, and there are few people on a mountain top who look as distressed as they do in the city. I still have a photo of Jim taken that day. From Jim I learned that being in the mountains is not a competition, but rather just a better way of being. He was a fine man, and I was only one of many who admired him. Warmest regards to his family, in whom he took such great pride.

Dear Stuart and Family
Herb and I send our sympathies to you at this time. It sounds like you had an amazing role model - and as far as we're concerned, we're sure that your Father (and Mother) must be proud of you. Will speak to you soon. Best regards, Rhoda Basian

I first met Jim when Mobil was drilling on Sable Island and I was working for Shell. Our paths crossed over the years but we renewed our friendship through the Seniors Ski Club. We had many discussions and I was amazed but not surprised at the way he tackled his illness. He was an incredible person and I shall miss him.

Jim was a super guy and a joy to be with in the mountains. He is already missed and was admired for the talented struggle with his illness. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
I enjoyed working in Jim's New Ventures group in Petro-Canada and have many fond memories of that time. He was energetic, loved what he was doing and I always learned something new after talking to Jim. He will be missed.
