James Mutch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 17 to Oct. 20, 2006.
MUTCH _ James Robert, P. Eng. 1930 - 2006 James Robert Mutch, P.Eng. passed away peacefully on October 16, 2006 after a six year battle with multiple myeloma. Jim will be sadly missed by his wife of fifty-two years, Shirley; his son Stuart; daughter Kathy; son-in-law Paul Long; and grandson Eric; his sister Ferne and brother-in-law Ed Albers of Parksville, B.C.; and many nephews and nieces. Jim was born in Calgary and grew up in Carseland. He attended the University of Alberta and obtained a Petroleum Engineering degree in 1953. It was while attending the U of A that he met Shirley. Jim joined Mobil Oil as a junior engineer, occupying positions of increasing responsibility. He retired from Petro-Canada in 1993. Jim was an avid and accomplished skier, hiker, canoeist, and cyclist and was a longtime member of the Foothills Nordic Club, the Seniors Alpine Ski Club and the YMCA. He was happiest outdoors and the Rockies in particular were a great joy to him. He was a voracious reader with a wide range of scientific and historical knowledge. Jim approached multiple myeloma with the same determination and tenacity that brought him success in so many areas of life. After a stem-cell transplant in 2000, he was able to resume cycling and skiing for several years. The length of his survival and his vigour were a marvel to both his family and to the medical profession. He could not have survived so long or so well without the care and attention of his family and friends. Jim's family would like to extend thanks for the excellent care provided by Dr. Kelly Young, Dr. Allan Jones, home care nurses Sue, June and Nishma and the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Chinook Hospice. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at the Calgary Golf and Country Club (access from 8 Street and 50 Avenue S.W.) on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Youth Orchestra (Suite 400, 258 Adelaide Street East, Toronto, ON, M5A 1N1), or to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2. Telephone 403-521-3433). Arrangements in care of COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES FUNERAL DIRECTORS. Telephone: 265-1199. Calgary Family Owned and Operated www.commemorativeservices.ca

I had the good fortune to both work with Jim at Mobil in the 1970s and to go on a few walks in the hills, though we lost touch with one another some years back. I have often quoted Jim, and still do, on the Mount Allan traverse many many years ago when he observed that there are few people in the city who look as at peace as they do on a mountain top, and there are few people on a mountain top who look as distressed as they do in the city. I still have a photo of Jim taken that day. From Jim I learned that being in the mountains is not a competition, but rather just a better way of being. He was a fine man, and I was only one of many who admired him. Warmest regards to his family, in whom he took such great pride.

Dear Stuart and Family

Herb and I send our sympathies to you at this time. It sounds like you had an amazing role model - and as far as we're concerned, we're sure that your Father (and Mother) must be proud of you. Will speak to you soon. Best regards, Rhoda Basian

I first met Jim when Mobil was drilling on Sable Island and I was working for Shell. Our paths crossed over the years but we renewed our friendship through the Seniors Ski Club. We had many discussions and I was amazed but not surprised at the way he tackled his illness. He was an incredible person and I shall miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

I enjoyed working in Jim's New Ventures group in Petro-Canada and have many fond memories of that time. He was energetic, loved what he was doing and I always learned something new after talking to Jim. He will be missed.
