James Newcomer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 8, 2016.
Newcomer, James Edward
Beloved Coronado High School theater teacher and director James Edward Newcomer passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on April 2, 2016. He was born to John Franklin Newcomer and Mary Louise McConnell Newcomer on December 3, 1936 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Jimmy was the second of three sons, following Johnny by four years and preceding Ronnie by nine years. Jimmy was a skilled orator in school, and in 1955 represented the State of Arizona at the regional finals, losing in that year's competition to the student who become national champion. Jimmy fell in love with the movies as a youngster. That influence, along with his brilliant voice and malleable appearance, allowed him to pursue acting as a career. James Newcomer appeared in Tucson and Phoenix area theaters throughout his career, and he also undertook a stint in New York summer stock at the Corning Summer Theatre before settling down to pursue his real passion: teaching drama and theater arts to young people. To support his desire to teach, Newcomer attained his BA and MA, both in education, from University of Arizona in 1959 and 1965. Newcomer then taught high school students the art and craft of theater, primarily at Scottsdale School District's Coronado High School, beginning in 1962 and continuing for more than forty years. Newcomer produced and directed more than 180 dramatic, musical and comedy shows, most at Coronado, but many staged at Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Stagebrush Theater, among many other theater locations in Arizona. Newcomer was admired by his colleagues in theater and his fellow teachers. Newcomer also was a devoted friend to his dogs and cats with whom he shared his life, even to the point of writing a letter to the editor that was published and was dedicated to his dog Hannah marking her passing. Jimmy was a doting older brother to his kid brother Ron, and went on to be an engaged uncle to his nephew Miles and his niece, Meghann, and great uncle to Meghann's son, Aaron. They all survive Newcomer along with his sister-in-law, Diane. Jim Newcomer was beloved by his students because all of them knew that they mattered to him. He pushed his students to become their best selves, and he was proud of their work that created such results. His students and colleagues are staging a Life Remembrance at Coronado High School on May 13, 2016, at 6:00. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be directed to Coronado Foundation for the Future, Newcomer Fund for the Performing Arts at www.corfound.org.

You crossed my mind today as I was surfing the net for voice over opportunities. Throughout my life since first knowing you in 1972 in my freshman year at Coronado when you chose me to play Gwendolyn in The Odd Couple, the thought of "Mr. Newcomer" brings a smile to my face as my heart overflows with warm memories. Memories in the classroom and on the stage, listening so intently to your excited voice and wise words of direction. That smile and gleam in your eyes spurred me on to be the best I could be. These, Newcomer, are some of my warmest memories of my life. Thank you.

Shocked to hear the news. He was a huge influence in my life and a great mentor. I became a professional actor largely due to his influence. He held us to a professional standard while still making theatre fun. I loved him as a father and friend.

Mr. Newcomer was a truly gifted human. He inspired so many young people and truly cared beyond the capacity of most. I'll never forget when he told us in Drama 1, "even if you never become an actor, I hope that at the very least you will be able to read a story to your children with flair after my class!" I never became an actress (although I still dream:) but my kid gets hella cool story time!! What a wonderful, generous man. I will miss your spirit and I thank you for your large contribution to my world. RIP Newcomer

Jim Newcomer was a unique and special teacher. A rare quality to 'see' through the many hidden qualities of up and comers and chose to nudge students through many ways of theater arts. His influence included 1000's of students. I was one. Coronado High, Scottsdale AZ 1976-80

Looking back I can honestly say my time with Jim and the entire drama faculty at Coronado were a huge influence my life path. Love, creativity, humor, discipline, laughter and so much more helped form my world view. I am so, so lucky to have had him in my life.

Mr. Newcomer changed my life and that of my siblings, Allen, Gary and Patty, all of whom took his classes and/or starred in his productions at Coronado. If it wasn't for Jim, I wouldn't be the man I am today. Miss you so much!!!

Mr. Newcome passed his love of theatre, acting, directing, designing, and the written word to so many of us. He enhanced us, supported us in our endeavors, and ensured that we would forever love the arts...especially live/living theatre and all that encompasses.

I owe my career as a theater professional to Jim Newcomer. I have worked extensively in theater across the country and have strong ties to other professionals who are past and current Tony award nominees and winners. Had Mr. Newcomer not given me a start, trusted and nurtured me along the way then inspired me afterward, my life would be far less rich. There is no way I can adequately express the boundless gratitude I have for the effect this man had on my life. Condolences to Ron and Diane. Forgive my brevity, you know you have my prayers. --David Lee Kelting / Dallas, TX
