James G. O'Grady, age 80, of Stratford, beloved husband of Madeline "Lynn" (Barrett) O'Grady, passed away August 29, 2015 in the West River Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. James was born in the Bronx, son of the late James J. and Elizabeth (McKenna) O'Grady. He grew up in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx and raised his family in Crestwood, NY, before moving to Stratford, CT in his later years. Mr. O'Grady was a United States Army Veteran with the... rank of Sergeant and was on active duty during the Berlin Wall Crisis. He worked for 31 years as a Revenue Officer for the IRS. He also worked for the Social Security Administration and The Stratford Senior Center. After retiring, he co-founded the Stratford Senior Men's Club. His most enduring quality was his love for his family. He also enjoyed simple pleasures like reading the daily newspaper, traveling and following sports, especially the New York Yankees. One of his enduring memories was of attending the farewell game for Mariano Rivera at Yankee Stadium, where he sat in the upper deck with his sons. Years before, he had taken his sons and their friends to a park in Crestwood and taught them how to play the game. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his son James O'Grady of Brooklyn, NY; his son Thomas and Lillian O'Grady of Crestwood, NY and their children Brendan, Catherine and Brian; and his son Paul and Michele O'Grady of Wilton, CT, and their children Emily and Zachary. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. by meeting directly in Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Rd, Stratford, CT. Interment will be Thursday September 3, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, NY. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St. Stratford.
