Nancy, I just saw that Jim passed away in April. I don't know if you remember me but Jim was an early mentor of mine. I met him in the George Rawlings campaign in 1970 or so, worked for him at the Suburban Institute and then in his office as supervisor. I remember when he met you and when you began dating and I may have met your girls on a later visit. I moved from Falls Church to North Carolina then South Carolina then Washington State where I recently retired after a 30 year career as a child advocate and anti-hunger advocate. I have such warm memories of Jim, or as I called him, Jimmer. I was really ill suited for both jobs I had with Jim. I screwed up the accounting system at the Sub Institute and was incredibly bad at constituent relations when he was a supervisor. Yet, he still supported and challenged me. As I look back on it, he was the first true advocate I knew and he changed my life forever. I walked down the dementia path with both my father and mother over a number of years. The loss is enormous and painful and I congratulate you on the quality of your journey as you outlined in the column I read. Much love, Linda

Dear Nancy:
I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Please know we are thinking of you and your family and have you in our prayers.
You already know this, but Jim was a great man, a dear friend, and a legislator that I looked up to and admired.
He was a man of conviction, character, and strong principles who was never afraid to take on a tough challenge.
Jim, Al Smith, and I were all very proud of our Handley High School roots and we shared many great stories about our beloved alma mater.
Jim is irreplaceable because they simply don't make elected officials like him anymore. He served for all the right reasons: his love of Virginia, his desire to help people, and his dedication to his fellow man.
Love and God bless.
Your friends always,
Russ and Emily Potts

So sorry to read of Jim's passing. He always fought for ideals in which he believed, and our community is now a lesser place without him.
