Sullivan, James L., Esq—Of Hampton, NH, and Deerfield Beach, Florida passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 17, 2023. He was 81 years old
Born in Somerville, and raised in both Somerville and Lexington, Massachusetts. He was the son to the Late Albert and Adelaide (Hurder) Sullivan. James had a successful 54-year career as an attorney. He owned his own law firm in Union Square. He was a graduate of Matignon High School, Boston College and Suffolk University Law School.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, sitting by the ocean in Hampton Beach, NH and by the pool in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and putting around his tomato garden in the summer months. He is an avid reader and learner. He knew a little something about everything. Jim loved traveling especially to the Caribbean Islands and to Ireland. He enjoyed scuba diving as well.
Jim was a good friend to the Somerville City Club, the Somerville Boys and Girls Club, the Somerville Boxing Club and many other Somerville organizations. He enjoyed helping those less fortunate that crossed his path and was often lawyer for the day at the Middlesex County Probate and Family Court. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Beloved husband of the late Alice (Geary) Sullivan. The devoted longtime companion of Maureen (Upton) Doherty. Loving father of Kate Feeney and her husband Brian, James Sullivan and his wife Antoinette, John W. Sullivan, and the late Beth Ann Tomeo, the late Greg Sullivan and the late Bradley Wright Joseph Sullivan. Cherished grandfather of Andrew Tomeo, Michael Gilberg, Shaun Sullivan, Shane Sullivan, Kayla (Sanford) Brady, Matthew Sullivan, Erin Feeney, and Yael Feeney and a great-grandfather of Sophia, Stella, Miles, Everett, Michael and Charlie.
Jim was predeceased by his brothers Dennis and Albert. He was a loving uncle to Seanne Sullivan and Geoffrey Sullivan. Cousin of Susan Spooner, Robert L. Spooner and William Ferreira.
He was the dear father-in-law to Tracy Sullivan. He is also survived by his dear friends Donald Caliguri and his wife Deborah (of Medford, MA) and James Flynn (of Hampton Beach, NH).
A funeral procession will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) on Wednesday January 25st at 10:00AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church 262 Washington St., Somerville at 11:00AM.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Services will conclude with interment at Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Aftermath Addiction Treatment Center, 607 North Ave, Suite 11-E, Wakefield, Massachusetts 01880 or to the charity of your choice.
