James Tempelis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2023.
James Herbert Tempelis passed away in the presence of his family from health complications on December 27th, 2022.

Born in 1935 in Superior, Wisconsin, the son of Harry and Thelma Tempelis, Jim lived a wonderfully full life of 87 years. He was the proud son of a Greek immigrant shoemaker. Despite his humble roots, the work ethic he learned as a boy ensured that he would make good on the American dream. Paying his way through college washing dishes, Jim graduated with a Batchelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and remained a proud Badger throughout his days.

Shortly after graduation, he would find his two life-long loves. First, he began his career with 3M in industrial sales where he would continue for the next 42 years. Next, under strict doctor's orders to gain weight, the skinny young man frequented the local Bridgeman's malt shop in Duluth, Minnesota. There he met the love of his life, Barbara, who, while working behind the counter, always surprised Jim with an extra scoop of ice cream. They married in 1962 and we're together for the remaining 60 1/2 years of Jim's life.

A few years following marriage, the couple moved to Medford, Oregon where Jim quickly became known as the 3M Abrasives Division lumber planing czar. There he and Barb welcomed their two sons, Andy and Matt, and added the first of five golden retrievers into the family. Free time was spent golfing, swimming, and socializing with friends at the Rogue Valley Country Club.

Jim's career took the family to Seattle in 1980. For more than 40 years Barb and Jim have resided in Yarrow Point, Washington. When he wasn't developing his sales team, Jim focused on coaching, mentoring, and supporting family and friends. Jim enjoyed golfing, the game of baseball, and wildlife photography. He also always relished a passionate political debate. Most of all Jim loved to visit with those he loved. All who knew Jim benefited from his positive, caring, selfless approach to life.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Barb, and his sons Andy and Matt, their wives Sara and Lori, and his grandchildren, Alaina, Julia, Alexia, Connor, and Lianna. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family is requesting a charitable donation in Jim's name. A celebration of life will be held in Jim's honor.

My dear Barb and Andy n Matt and family, I love you all and will miss Jim and his quick smile and jovial attitude toward all. We were young friends in Medford, Oregon where my Jon was a customer of 3M sandbelts. We had so much fun together dining out, golphing, even pheasant hunting together. We started our families together on a vacation to Lake Tahoe but before our kids were even one, Jon and I moved to Roseburg. Our love for each other has never diminished, and my heart goes out to you all at this time of loss of precious Jim.

Barbara - I only met you once at a 3M Awards Ceremony that you and Jim had flew to St. Paul for. Jim was my hero. The first time I visited customers with him, he dropped me at the airport at SeaTac and said "Carl, you are in Marketing now. Never forget, a big part of your job is that are a 'litigator' for YOUR customers... for THEIR quality, for THEIR service... " I have never forgotten that. I miss Jim https://studylib.net/doc/11736971/abrasive-planing-of-lumber-mr.-james-tempelis-minnesota-m

Barbara and family......I will forever remember my many visits with Jim out in the street between our homes on Yarrow Point. What a gentleman and great neighbor. Jim was always positive and happy and he shared so many stories. I will miss Jim very much.

Barbara and Family. I am so sorry to hear about Jim's passing. I always get a smile on my face when I think of Jim and all the times we spent at 3M. Jim was a relationship salesman and loved the wood industry. We worked together at customers both while he was a sales specialist and as my boss. He always found a way to make any situation positive, funny and professional. When I joined a distributor we worked many programs together. I will miss Jim and I will keep you and the family in my thoughts and prayers. Andi sends her condolences as well
