Janelle Janish Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2017.
Janelle Marie Cordell-Janish (45) of Humble, TX died on November 25, 2017 following a long valiant fight against breast cancer. She leaves behind her husband, Paul Janish and her daughter, Vanessa Janish.

Janelle was born on June 22, 1972 in Wichita, KS to Simon and Anita Cordell who predeceased her. She grew up in Colwich, KS, as a farmer's daughter and part of a large, loving family with a sister, Mary Beth and two brothers, Allen and Aaron. She attended High School in Andale, KS where she graduated valedictorian and excelled in drama and band playing flute (first chair). She attended college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK where she graduated with an M.S. in Meteorology and co-authored a Weather and Forecasting journal paper as well as several conference pre-print articles involving her graduate research study. She continued her post-graduate career as a meteorologist/programmer and radar analyst at the National Severe Storms Laboratory as well as with various other groups at the University of Oklahoma. After the death of her sister Mary Beth in 1996, Janelle became actively involved in Camp Hope, a summer camp promoting the health of children and adolescents with cancer.

Janelle met her husband, Paul Janish in Norman, OK in October 1992 and they were married at St. Mark Catholic Church in St. Mark, KS on September 28, 1996. After a multi-year stay in Norman, OK where they made countless, life-long friends, they relocated to Humble, TX in 2002 where Janelle continued her work at Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc., and Impact Weather. Their daughter, Vanessa was born on February 16, 2006, after which Janelle elected to stay at home to enjoy motherhood, eventually becoming actively involved in Vanessa's pre- and elementary school activities as well as ballet, basketball and lacrosse.

Janelle had a special love for crafting and scrapbooking, hosting several scrapbooking retreats and regularly attended Close to my Heart conventions where she made countless friends. She was an avid fan of Star Trek, the Food Network, and classic movies, and English romance dramas. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, she dedicated her fight to her daughter and went into remission in 2015. She took that opportunity to travel and build upon her close neighborhood friendships and family relationships both in Kansas and Texas. She relapsed in Summer 2016 but remained a brave, strong-willed woman dedicated to beating her disease, until she died peacefully at her home, surrounded by close friends and family including her husband and daughter.

Janelle is survived by her husband, daughter, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephew and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, Simon and Anita Cordell; her sister, Mary Beth Cordell, and grandparents, Leo and Marie Seidl and Joseph and Marie Cordell.

A wake, rosary, eulogy, and celebration of her life will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Highway 59 North, Kingwood, TX 77339 on Tuesday 11/28 at 5pm with a light reception immediately following at 7pm; all are welcome. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 527 S. Houston Ave., Humble, TX 77338 on Wednesday at 3pm with a full catered reception and further celebration of her life at the parish hall immediately following; all are welcome.

The family would especially like to thank Janelle's primary care givers, Kelly Krenzke and Emily Stander, doctors and staff at Texas Oncology, caregivers at Epic Home Health, and Silverado Hospice, for prolong life and assisting in a peaceful, comfortable and dignified passing.

In lieu of flowers, we would like to ask for a donation to be sent to The Pink Ladies Atascocita UMC (19325 Pinehurst Trail Dr., Humble, TX 77346) or Camp Hope Heartland (PO Box 1529, Great Bend, KS 67530), both of which are non-profits and were organizations close to Janelle's heart.

I am so saddened to hear of her passing. I learned a lot in high school from Janelle in debate and drama. some of my best high school memories were of the friendship with Janelle. She always had the best smile, nice things to say about people and life, and great advice.

I offer the Janish & Cordell Family our deepest sympathy and prayers.

So sorry to hear of Janelle's passing. I worked with her at Camp Hope. We shared weather stories of life living in the country. I think of Janelle every spring when the sky gets dark. Thinking of her watching out for all of us made me feel safe.
