I often thought of Grandma Jan and I regret not seeing her the past 20 years or so. She was just as much as a Grandma to my brother and I as our real Grandma (Dorothie) was. When I heard of her passing, this photo quickly came to mind. She sent Cody and I this, along with a handwritten note (which isn’t dated) that I cherish very much.

In the note she spoke about having knee surgery and recuperating, and how she ended up on this horse to begin with. She was on a 35,000 acre ranch in Phoenix, AZ. It was 4 miles up a lane to get to the house, and it was the first time she had seen a real ranch. The horse was ridden by a Mexican man who used it to check on the cattle and calves. He was a hired hand for the ranch. She spoke about how lovely it was there, but how she wouldn’t want to live there. She continues by saying that your mom (Sue) would love it though.

She ended the letter by mentioning she had the kids that day and had a good time with them, and that she’s be going out to dinner for her birthday. Also, Indiana Beach had a new roller coaster and that we’d get to see it next Saturday, and that she hoped she’d get to see us that weekend for Great Grandma George’s birthday. I love you both very much.

Love, Jan

Even after all this time, I knew EXACTLY where this photo and letter was. I miss her, but I know she’s with Pappaw Ray and everyone else she missed ever so dearly. I have several fond memories with her while I was young, and I’ll never forget how special she made Cody and I feel. Even though we were technically her great niece and nephew, she treated us like her own grandkids, and never made us feel less than. She’ll always have a special place in my heart. I love you too, Grandma Jan!
