JEAN EDEMA Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jun. 10, 2017.
JEAN EDEMA MARCH 12, 1943 - JUNE 2, 2017 Rachel Jeanette (Jean) Edema (nee Lewis) born in Colombo, Sri Lanka went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Friday, June 2nd 2017 surrounded by her loved ones at Surrey Memorial Hospital in Surrey BC. Predeceased by her parents Lynden and Rachel, Jean is survived by her beloved husband; Olkie, son Keith (Minoli), daughter Averil, grandchildren Michael, Mitchell, Matthew, Brandon and Brooklyn, her brother Lyn (Marlene), niece; Nirmali, nephew; Tony (Fiona), God daughter; Verushka, numerous cousins and friends. Jean touched many lives in her earthly journey in a quiet unassuming way. She was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, God mother, grandmother and friend - loving, caring, compassionate, selfless and generous to a fault. Coming to Canada from a very different culture, she soon adapted to the way of life here while not letting go of her Christian principles and values. She worked as a secretary at the Lions Society for Children with Disabilities from 1980 to 2001 when she left to help look after her newborn grandchildren Brandon and Brooklyn. She was also an excellent cook and cake-maker. We all enjoyed her home cooked meals but above all she was the best grandmother that a grandchild could hope for! A service to celebrate Jean's life will be held on Saturday, June 17th at 10.30 a.m. at Valley View Funeral Home, 14644, 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC

Dear Uncle Olkie, Keith, Averil and family. It's been a year so soon that Aunty Jean has gone to be with the Lord. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. They say time will heal but loosing my own mother, it is so tough and mama was so looking forward to seeing loved ones last year in August. It is only God's grace and strength that carries us through but the pain is real. May His loving comforting presence be with us all in our personal times of grief. We may not understand why but God is merciful and his loving kindness envelopes us all.

Dear Olkie and family. Our Deepest sympathies to you on the loss of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to numerous people around the world.
We have only fond memories of our short but memorable holiday with you in Canada - and were looking forward to reciprocate the hospitality with a visit from you to Australia; this was not to be - God has his ways. We learnt so much from your family how to live a good christian life and still have fun, generosity, kindness and hospitality (even gathering and entertaining family and mutual friends to meet and greet). Jean will always remain in our hearts with love and a smile; She was such fun. Remain strong Olkie and family, remember God smiled on us all when he brought Jean into our lives.
With God's Blessings and love

Dear Olkie, my prayers and thoughts are with you and the children at this time. I remember you and Jean as a young married couple attending CFC. Visiting us often, and even after you left SL never failed to visit us when you were in SL on holiday. My memories of Jean are of a shy, quiet and a lovely young woman with always a smile on her face. May God bless you and the children with peace.

Dear Olkie,
We pray that you keep strong and be surrounded by your lovely children and grand children and friends and family always. Jean was such a loving and caring person and we got to know more of her personality when we attended the Celebration of her Life, through the loving eulogies of you all. May her soul always rest in peace and with so much love in her heart we are sure she will be there watching over all of you even now when she is no more.
We will see you soon.
With Thoughts and Prayers

Dear Uncle Olkie, Keith, Avril and families, we are very sorry for the loss of Aunty Jean from all your lives. We have the fondest memories of her as a peaceful, kind and gentle soul and the meanest cook in town. I hope that you all will recover quickly knowing that she's in a much better place, free of pain and suffering.
We wish you all strength and peace.
Love always,
Sharon, Ricardo, Louis and the girls

Dear Olkie, I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Jean. Please accept our belated sympathies and may God grant you and the rest of your family the strength to get through this sad time. We will always treasure fond memories of your friendship and kindness going back to the days in Colombo, Sri Lanka (in the 1950's) and the recent visits made by Jean and yourself to Melbourne, Australia.

Never did one week with anyone like Olkie and Jean bring a greater blessing to me! It was one of my most memorable Christmases. My mum and Valma, and Treeny and her friend Linda also experienced the very same joy when they visited too! God gifted Jean with a wonderful "presence." Jean just made you feel wanted, loved, and instant family. And we all said how much we wanted to go and visit Olkie and Jean again (but we live across continents!) And her cooking! Just really delicious! I can't help but say Jean's "presence" was more than human. She truly had the gentle Spirit of Christ that truly loves just where you are. I could talk of the kindness and generosity of Olkie and Jean, but what was so good was when Jean made me laugh so hard when we played Pictionary one night. That was nearly 28 years ago and it still stands out. We laughed at Phylis trying to recall, "My absent minded uncle had an abscess on his ankle." The house was already crowded with Brod, Sheridan, and Phyllis. Why aren't we more gracious like Jean! Olkie and Jean exemplified true hospitality. The world would be a different world if we all welcomed strangers as they did me! Just like Jesus! Love and prayers for all the family from Treeny and Anthony.

To dear Olkie & family,
My deepest sympathies on the passing away of Jean.
I was so glad I'd recently re-connected to her via Facebook. It brought back such fond memories of Christian Fellowship Centre days of the late '60's. I sort of looked up to her, (and Naomi).
She told me she was going to be visiting Colombo, in August this year, and so I was planning on being there myself.
She wished to stay at the apartment I was going to stay, down Rajasinghe Road, Wellawatte, overlooking the ocean, but when she learnt there was no swimming pool, she said she'd look elsewhere.
Olkie, I am so so sorry.
Sincerely,
Sarojini Cooke - Melbourne, Australia

Dear Olkkie Keith and Avril Jean has such a great influence on my life. Everything I know today as a Christian is what Jean taught me in Sunday School. My sisters and I cherish beautiful memories of Jean and her lovely family Aunty Rachel and Uncle Linden who were model loving Christians who cared so much for us. I will cherish her memory forever. Deepest sympathies to you Olkie Keith and Avril and the rest. God bless you all Sincerely Dalryn Van Cuylenberg

Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her obituary covers her status as a mother , wife, grandmother, volunteer. But truth be told, she was a major reason for Olkie's success as a banker. She supported him throughout his career. She will look down on her family from heaven with justifiable pride. Bless her love and devotion.
