Jean Ferner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2025.
Jean Elizabeth "Jeannie" Ferner, 79, passed away on January 15, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on November 10, 1945, in Arlington, Virginia, Jeannie lived a life rich with creativity, intellect, and compassion.

Jeannie was the daughter of Erma Pauline Woodward and Robert Ferner. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael Knoepfler, whose sudden passing was a profound and heartbreaking loss. Known for his brilliant mind, wonderful eccentricity, and infectious humor, he brought joy, madness, and adventure to her life in countless ways. She was also preceded in death by her younger brother, Thomas W. Ferner, whose passing in childhood left a deep imprint on her heart and who remained a quiet presence in her mind throughout her life.

She is lovingly remembered by her brother-in-law, Yahss Knoepfler; her chosen niece and kindred spirit, Rachael Drummond; and by the beautiful circle of friends, neighbors, caregivers, and kind souls who stood by her with love, laughter, unwavering care, open hearts, and helping hands.

A naturally gifted musician, she had the remarkable ability to play by ear and harmonize beautifully, bringing joy to all who heard her. She played a variety of instruments-including guitar and tabla-and sang with a voice known for its sweetness. Her passion for music was matched by her skill as a writer and editor, where her thoughtful insights and eloquence left a lasting impression on those who read her work.

Just as keenly, she observed the world around her with insight and compassion, bringing characters to life on the page with honesty, depth, and wit. As an editor, she was both sharp and generous-offering feedback that was as constructive as it was kind, always seeking to elevate the work while honoring the writer's voice.

Jeannie had a sparkle in her eye and a mind that never stopped exploring. She loved nothing more than a good, meaningful conversation-whether diving into philosophy, unpacking art or politics, or playfully debating big ideas over coffee. She brought passion, sharp insight, and plenty of humor to every exchange, but what truly made her conversations special was her warmth. She listened with real curiosity, spoke with heart, and always made you feel heard, seen, and deeply valued.

Her love for animals was a true reflection of the kindness and tenderness at the heart of her spirit. Fiercely loyal to those she cherished, Jeannie was a gentle soul whose friendship brought comfort, warmth, and a quiet light to every room she entered. Her absence leaves a profound space in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A memorial service was held in Albuquerque to honor Jeannie's life and legacy.

May her memory be a blessing and bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
