I am deeply saddened to hear of Jeff's passing. Even though we met on a few occasions only in SF, Berlin and LA, I remember Jeff as one of the coolest dudes and most understanding human being I have ever met.

Please find below what I shared via Instagram today (https://www.instagram.com/p/BUhTUhllNHR/), upon late last night learning of Jeffrey's death:

"I was traveling last summer when a friend in Manhattan texted to see if I was at my apartment. He was finally making good on his promise to gift me one of his photographs a thank-you for sharing his story through an interview back in 2014.

We weren't in constant contact, but mutual respect was always present between us. I was in awe of his valiant battle with brain cancer and the way he openly conveyed the ordeal, with humor and raw honesty.

I returned from my trip a few weeks later to find not only had he hand-delivered this print, but also he'd had it matted and framed. That truly moved me.

Upon discovering that this past Sunday he lost the war with cancer, his gesture moves me even more.

I'm thankful to have hanging in my home this little piece of him. I'm grateful to have witnessed and documented his courage. It was a privilege to know him and to write about him. I feel fortunate I had the chance.

I'm sick with regret that when he invited me to his latest gallery opening, I missed it. I had prior plans. I'd catch the next one. Surely there'll be another before too long. Nope. Not so. That would be his last.

Jeffrey Shagawat was special, exceptionally gifted, brimming with personality and opinions. A husband, father, son, brother, friend. A film-only photographer. A brave soul who touched a lot of lives and loved his family fiercely.

This post is my mini tribute. He was without a doubt one of New York's coolest characters. A genuine individual I'm so sorry to see go.

Love, hugs and deepest condolences to his beautiful wife and young daughter."
