Jerome R. Traughber

Jerome R. Traughber, 80, of Mayville, formerly of Horicon, died on June 29, 2017, at Crossroads Care Center in Mayville. A visitation will be held on July 7, 2017, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Parish with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Michael Petrie presiding. Inurnment will take place at St. Malachy Cemetery. Jerry was born on September 3, 1936, in Amboy, Illinois, to T. Lloyd and Georgia A. (Wingert) Traughber.He graduated from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, in 1959 and attended Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Illinois. He also studied under Science Foundation Grants in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Cable, Wisconsin. Jerry was united in marriage to Barbara Gail Cannell on July 4, 1959, at St. Bernadette Church in Rockford, Illinois. He taught science at Kewaunee Junior High School in Illinois and moved to Horicon, Wisconsin in 1961 to teach at the Junior High School until 1995. Jerry was also Assistant Principal at Van Brunt for 17 years. He enjoyed teaching and coaching. He coached football and basketball at the junior high and wrestling, golf, and tennis at Horicon High School. He loved his students, athletes, and colleagues. Jerry was active in community organizations including: Lions Club, St. Malachy Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Neighborhood Watch Program, and Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor's Center. He was also a Horicon Community Chest director, amateur radio enthusiast, member of a softball league, bowling league, and bridge team. Jerry started a multiple sclerosis support group. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Horicon Jerry is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Lisa Traughber, son Jerome Thomas (Lori)Traughber, grandson Jerome Mitchell Traughber, granddaughter Madison Lee Traughber, sister: Cynthia Eustice, sisters-in-law Marge Traughber, Mary Sue Cannell, Georgeanne (Dennis) Daly,Thomasine (Francis) Bockman, Penelope McCarthy, and Elaine (Mary) Cannell.He was preceded in death by his son Joseph, parents, mother and father-in-law T. Frederickand Eleanor Cannell, sister Judy, brother Thomas G., brothers-in-law Richard Eustice, JohnCannell, and Charles McCarthy.
