Jerry Luedders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 9 to Oct. 12, 2018.
June 27, 1943 - October 5, 2018 Jerry Duane Luedders, 75 years of age, from Los Angeles, California, died due to a heart attack on October 5, 2018 in Los Angeles, California. Jerry was born on June 27, 1943 in Sturgis, Michigan, to Stanley and Edith (Ely) Luedders. His siblings, Jack and Judy, live in Colfax, California. On October 17, 2008, Jerry married Joseph D. Gilbert in Los Angeles, California. Jerry believed that the art and science of teaching and learning is one of the highest expressions of ones perfection of being. Early in his career he was committed to uniquely combining a successful career as a university professor and academic administrator with his lifelong commitment to the art of teaching, while simultaneously demonstrating through his own performance that which he teaches. Trained at the University of Michigan, Indiana University, Harvard University and the Paris Conservatory, Luedders first won critical national acclaim for his premier performances with the Minnesota Orchestra of Ricercari Notturni, a concerto written for him by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. A subsequent performance at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., won a Kennedy Center Friedheim Award. Exceptionally active as a soloist and recitalist, he performed extensively on five of the six major continents including in Japan, China, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Estonia, Russia, Chile, Argentina, and throughout the United States. Recently he performed in Paris and Fontainebleau, France. He appeared as soloist with the Fairbanks Symphony, Arctic Chamber Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, numerous Civic and University Orchestras and Wind Ensembles, in the United States and Europe. He was featured on six compact discs as saxophone soloist or conductor. His advocacy of new music and the world premieres of works written for him by Robert Coburn, George Huessenstamm, Liviu Marinescu, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and David Whitwell, earned him the honor of being named a Distinguished Soloist from the American Hemisphere by Harry Gee in his book Saxophone Soloists and Their Music 1844-1985. Mr. Luedders was an active performer, speaker, and writer. Over and above everything he has ever done in his life, the most rewarding part, which bled into all other areas, he was a Teacher! His heart was teaching. Highly regarded as a teacher, his students, consistent winners of state, national, and international competitions, now occupy important university and professional positions in classical, jazz, and pop music. Mr. Luedders was named to the "World's Who's Who of Musicians," was twice listed in the "Outstanding Educators of America" and was selected for the 2003 and 2004 editions of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He held administrative positions as Associate Director of the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts, Vice Provost, and Chair of the Department of Music at California State University, Northridge. Since 1974, he was an active chair or member of on-site visitation teams for the National Association of Schools and regularly served as a consultant to institutions. Previous positions include Dean of Fine Arts at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University, Director of the School of Music at Lewis & Clark College. In addition to his academic work, he served on the board of the Muriel Polia Foundation. He also enjoyed his membership in the Model A Club, where he served as secretary and was also a Knight in The Order of Saint Lazarus where he served as Vice Commander of The West. Jerry Luedders is survived by his beloved husband, Joseph (Gilbert), brother, Jack and sister, Judy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Edith, and his nephew, Cory J. Luedders. We will always carry the sound of his laugh in our minds and the lessons he taught us in our hearts. Funeral services will be held on October 17, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068, Chapel: Church of the Hills.

When I realized I needed Jerry´s
counsel again a few years back, for some unknown reason, I decided to Google him first. I was so shocked to learn of his passing. It literally took my breath away. I still mutter "Jerry-isms" to myself from time to time. Man do I wish I could talk to you again right now! I´m so sorry, Joseph. Jerry was a great man who left a lasting legacy. I will forever miss his calm counsel. - Orin

I never watch a U of M football game or see a post on FB of the university's marching band without thinking of Jerry. Was thrilled to be in the stands and watch him perform with the band. Will never forget him. Love to Jack and Judy.

Mr Luedders was my college clarinet teacher and has been a dear friend for fourth five years. What a guy! As Shakespear said We shall never see the likes of him again. Heaven has more beautiful music because Jerry is there. Thanks for the memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I remember him well from Indiana U where he played bass clarinet with the IU Philharmonic, and did so very ably. His sense of humor and joie de vivre were unforgettable.

You brought wisdom, humor and sunshine to every contact. And you had the best funeral ever, bristling as it was with saxophones of every shape and size, reflecting so much love for you. A final BRAVO!

We're still in shock and so glad we were able to spend some time with him recently! David and I will never forget tooling around the curves and down the steep hill in the Model A. It was such a thrill, what must have been an arduous task for him and we never saw it. All we saw was his joy in our joy. Bless his soul, he'll forever be in our hearts.

Condolences to you Jack. You graciously hosted me, Rita and another saxophone player in your home for a week when Jerry brought us to San Francisco for a concert tour of Jerry's saxophone quartet. I think it was in the summer of 1971.

I studied saxophone with Jerry throughout high school and again at college, learning a great deal from him about playing the saxophone and how to think and play with musicality.

Our saxophone quartet also played many concerts together throughout college and went to Paris and studied with the saxophone quartet under the leadership of the Paris Conservatory's Professor of Saxophone.

Jerry gave my fellow music students and me a great many opportunities to learn and perform music. For that, I am grateful. I actively perform now in a woodwind trio on bassoon and saxophone with a clarinetist and flutist, both also former students of Jerry. So his influence and musical impact lives on in St. Cloud, MN, where Jerry worked and lived for 7+ years, early on in his teaching career.

I'm glad to hear that Jerry got married. My condolences also to you, Joseph, and to Judy.

Jerry was a light in so many lives. Whether as a teacher, a counselor or as a friend he was indelible. He always left you better off than you were before he touched your life. He stood for truth, principle, and kindness. Goodness exuded from his heart and soul, unless you cut him off in traffic! LOL. Jerry was one-of-a- kind, an amazing musician, an accomplished performer and set the bar high for anyone who came into his classroom. The world was a classroom for Jerry and he taught as much as he studied. A true Renaissance man, he knew about a wide variety of disciplines including plumbing. The man was as adept with a conductor's baton as he was with a wrench and could teach us all a few things about pretty much everything in life. I loved him with all my heart. I miss him dearly and I know he is carrying on in the next plane just like the adventurous spirit he was on earth. He will always be present in our hearts. His flame will never go out. Love you my friend.
