Joan Schuetz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 1, 2025.
Joan Marie "Joanie" Schuetz (née Gutowsky), 86, passed away on February 25, 2025, in Normal, Illinois.

Born on April 3, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Joan was a gifted musician and educator who dedicated her life to the art of singing and teaching. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and Illinois State University before pursuing a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Illinois State University. Her passion for music was evident in every aspect of her life, from performing on national and local stages to mentoring countless students who were fortunate enough to learn from her expertise and warmth.

Joan had an extraordinary ability to bring people together. She loved to entertain and frequently hosted gatherings for her students, neighbors, and friends. Her home was always filled with laughter, music, and the joy of shared company. Alongside her beloved husband, Peter, she found immense happiness in singing and dancing-expressions of their deep love for both music and each other.

Faith played an important role in Joan's life. Raised in the Missouri Synod Lutheran tradition by devout parents, she carried forward the legacy of her grandfather, who was a founding father of Missouri Synod Lutheran churches in Chicago. Her faith provided her with strength and guided her generous spirit throughout her life.

Joan's kindness knew no bounds. She was a devoted mother to Anna Schuetz of Normal, IL; Christian Schuetz (Paula) of Chicago, IL; and Daniel Schuetz (Jen) of Normal, IL. She cherished her grandchildren-Christian Jr., Audrey, and Emily-all of Chicago-and took great pride in their accomplishments and growth. Though she is now reunited with Peter in eternity, the love she shared with those around her will continue to resonate through generations.

Beyond her love for music and teaching, Joan had a deep affection for animals-especially her beloved Collies: Timber, Suzie, Katie, Bruno, Nicholas, and Liesl. She found great comfort in their companionship and believed wholeheartedly that they would be waiting for her in heaven alongside dear friends and family members who had gone before her.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Joan's life will be held on April 5, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Chez Schuetz (504 Maple Place, Normal, IL 61761). Friends and family are invited to join in this potluck of remembrance featuring Biaggi's cuisine, drinks, cake-and most importantly-the sharing of cherished memories. Guests are encouraged to bring a dish to pass as they honor Joan's remarkable life together.

Joan Marie Schuetz was a blessing to all who knew her-a world-class singer and teacher whose kindness left an indelible mark on everyone she met. May her memory bring comfort to those who loved her as they carry forward the joy she so effortlessly spread throughout her lifetime.

Christian, Anna and Daniel: On one hand, it´s very sad that both Peter and Joan have now crossed over and have joined the heavenly choir but on the other hand what a choir it will now be! I knew you all when you were young as we had many opportunities to visit the Schuetz hacienda as students. Your mom and dad were an integral part of my maturing process. They were not just voice teachers, they were examples of great human beings. So many have benefitted from their kindness, knowledge and generosity throughout our lives. They shall be sorely missed, but they will live on in our hearts and memories. May God give you all comfort and peace in this time and may you also remember ALL of the great times you had together. They were both extremely proud of all three of you. May they both rest in eternal peace and may their memories continue to live on. God´s blessings to you all.

Joan was always a gem, the matriarch of the early morning dog walkers. She was never without one of her beloved collies until she moved into Sugar Creek but even then her last one, Leisl, would stop to visit her there. You could also count on Joan to have wine, rackets and Darjeeling cheese if you stopped at her house unannounced. She always welcomed you and your dogs inside. I am sad that she has left her earthly presence behind but happy that she is rejoicing with the Lord.

Joan you are gone but not forgotten. Greatest neighbor one could ever asked for. Loved our Friday afternoons drinking tea with whiskey.

So many wonderful memories with your mom! Still now, I can hear her voice saying, "Ooo No No TERRIFIC!" What a special lady! Also, your mom is the one who introduced me to the love of white wine! I was always a red only until her. She was a blessing to everyone she met! She was walking JOY! Loving Hugs, Betsy

Daniel - I know the heartache of losing your mom. It sounds like she was a truly amazing person - mom, mentor, teacher, musician - who impacted so many with her faith, talent, and zest for life. You reflect those same qualities. May God bless you, keep you, and wrap you in his love and peace. Bob and I are praying for you and your family. Hugs to you.

Although I didn't know Joan personally, I admired her singing abilities. 59 years ago this coming May, I asked her to sing at my wedding. She graciously accepted, but was unable to fulfill her acceptance, due to illness. What was I to do, but ask Peter if he could fill in for her. He graciously said he would, but wasn't sure if he should sing the same song since it was really written for a woman to sing. I said I didn't care as time was short and I needed a singer. The song he sang, was "The Song of Ruth", and it was beautiful, nonetheless. Just a short memory that I have carried with me all of these years. Thank you to both your parents!

We met Joan and Peter when they careened into our driveway, jumped from their car and ran over to pet our collie, Mickey. They had just lost their collie and were ecstatic to see one in the neighborhood. We were star struck when we discovered they were the stunning couple that had danced and sang in the Holiday Spectacular. They were not only treasured by their family but the entire community. We feel fortunate to have known them if only for a short while.

It was an honor to meet Joan. She had such grace, dignity and joy. I am her roommate´s sister, and Joan was a reminder to me that we can find beauty in music, flowers and friendship in life´s toughest physical conditions. Her attitude and enjoyment helped me accept with grace my sister´s condition, and I believe it helped my sister. My deepest condolences to her family. JoAnn Simkins
